A US soldier who lost all four limbs in Iraq says he has "hope for the future" after becoming the first serviceman to undergo a double arm transplant.

The team at Baltimore's Johns Hopkins Hospital called it "the most complicated limb transplant procedure so far performed in the United States".

The former infantryman is one of just seven people in the United States who have successfully received double arm transplants.

Well I never realised arm transplants were ever carried out previously so I was surprised to learn this was the 7th. Amazing stuff really, giving the guy a whole new lease of life. I wonder how far transplant surgery will go. My guess is you will be able to transplant just about anything one day.

Saw this last night on the news. Absolutely amazing.

Couldn't help but think though that those arms had to come from someone else...how long before we start growing parts purely for transplant?

Didn't the first person to have one of these eventually opt to have them amputated again due to not being able to handle the fact they were someone else s hands?

Yeah that's the weirdest thing - skin tone/hand sizes/hair colour and thickness etc not matching. I'd much prefer a limb grown from my own DNA than someone else's.

I think the guy prefered to do this rather than wait for his own DNA relocated arms... What with that not being current medical technology and all...

I'm sure you would but, given that isn't currently possible, if you had no arms I think you might re-think your objections.

Meh, I want mine replaced with Deus Ex style augmented parts. Pneumatic power fapping for the win!
