BMW E60 530i - Dad wants a upgrade - Any good?

When I went to Waitrose last night in my neighbours 530d auto it ruined my day not being able to do 155

I have to say there was something fairly awesome about touching 155mph as I accelerated down Autobahn 92 towards Munich after looking at the Dingolfing plant where the 5 Series are built :D

The BMW warranty mitigates all of the N53 problems. As you can see they are very common given both people posting in this thread with experience of the N53 have had issues.

Trouble is on a 5 Series it is quite expensive compared to the 3 Series. It's circa £70-80 a month for the full package on a sub 60k mile car, on a car with over 60k it's quite a lot more expensive.

Fox, what do you think of the 3 series, E90 range? It's just in interest as well, the 3 series is comparable to the A4.

Gearing and power delivery are both valid in this instance. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a diesel fanboy, but nor am I a serious petrol head. Hell the next car I'm looking at is the 535i. However I'm also governed by common sense and know that in most scenarios, these two cars would perform very similarly side by side. I'll drive whatever car fits my needs. That's fast becoming a petrol :p

Moot debate here though as the op knows its a 530i that's wanted

There isn't anything wrong with the E90, it's just not a 5 Series alternative which I bizarrely thought it might be and managed to not realise it wasn't until after I'd bought one :p

A interesting point he bought up was if I can get insured on a 5 series.. and well, I can't.

But I can get insured on a 330i... Hmm.. I'll speak to him again tomorrow. Audi A4 (B8) will have to be seriously considered too now though.

It would seem very odd that you cannot get insured on a 530i but can on a 330i. My 530i is always cheaper to insure than a 3 Series.

So?

The 330i is quicker than the 530i. It's also a higher insurance group. As a result it tends to cost more to insure, especially when younger. When i first started looking into get an x30i I was 20 and often insurers would refuse to quote for a 330i but would be happy to quote for a 530i.

I'll have another look but yeah, 530i seemed out the question but 330i was very reasonable considering my age.

I guess now we'll have to try a 3 series and see if a comfort spec is any good.
