Anyone know about boilers etc?

he has fitted a new boiler for 1600 ?

but now wants 1500 to fit a new gas supply ?

is this even right ? does he really want 1500 to fit a new pipe?

it is totally possible that the gas pipe to the new boiler is too small or the working pressure of gas to the new boiler could be down but this job should be done at the same time as the boiler being fitted..

what has the installer said? in detail, do you know?

that price depends on how long the gas run is, how much gas pipe would have to be fitted? if its a short run and easy enough to do then 1500 is too much, if its a massive run and, like if you live in a castle and a 28mm pipe needs fitting 1500 may be ok, still seams steep to me..

working pressure of gas at the meter and boiler and the size of the gas pipe should have been checked before he fitted the new boiler though.. unless this wasnt possible at the time for some reason ?

Used to be a fittter, then gas network designer - you check the pressure at the meter, then calculate what size pipe you need. Normally an educated guess, erring on the large size. It's his fault, he should fix it for free.

Fitted a new boiler and the guy cleaned the radiators etc, agreed £1600 ish.

He rang yesterday and said the gas pressure is not strong enough to the boiler, so solution is run a separate pipe from the gas meter to the boiler, he wants £1500 ish.

Don't know much about this stuff, does this sound right?

Explain to him that he is the supposed expert and its his problem if he never checked for that before he started....

He is Corgi registered yes?

Right some more actual facts!

We require about 35 meters of 35mm commercial piping ....and a second guy took a look and said £1500 sounds about right..

Should also point out its an Vaillant ecotec Pro 28.

35mm copper pipe (the last time I bought some) was about £9.50 a linear metre. So on the above thats £350 for pipe + say £150 fittings and gubbings and cool £1K to install it.

Where abouts in the UK are you ?

Shouldn't he have ensured that the gas pressure was sufficient when installing it for £1600? sounds like a bit of a cowboy if he just rings up afterwards saying you need further work done for an extortionate amount.

I still don't get how it's going to cost something like £1000 labour to fit? They run through the route with you? And time scale? Of course the guy should have known the pipe would be a issue, what size pipe is the gas run in now?

Hmmm from what you wrote, sounds like maybe you need to work on your bargaining technique.

Never ask someone whether £X sounds right... because if it's way too high they will just say yes and hope you give them the money :p

Maybe ask for a quote instead?

Sorry that wasn't me telling him the previous quote, that was him giving a similar quote.

Ok so I've made a mistake.

The meter is at teh front of the house and the boiler is at the back so 35m now sounds more plausible!

One person wanted to rip up floorboards and carpets, the other wants to go on the outside.

Sounds like this is pretty complicated afterall!

Meter at front of house - Boiler at back of house - 35mm copper pipe, check.

35metres of pipe though, how big is your house ? I dont think we've got 35metres of pipe for every bit of plumbing in our entire house to be honest. It seems like a vast mount considering the average house is no more than 10-12 metres "deep"

I agree with others above.
He's cocked the job up and now expects you to shell out more?

the first thing that was done when we had ours recently installed was we were asked where the boiler was wanted, where the gas supply was and they had a shufty about, measured pressures and then said 22mm would be fine, Job done.

Surely any plumber would check these sort of things before ripping stuff to pieces and installing a new system? As above also please say he IS corgi/gas safe registered?

Where did you get his details? Were they supplied by Vaillant?
35mm seems fairly hefty for a home install too
