Are these still popular with certain people?

This is not a price check, so you dont have to mention any numbers, just wondering if there is still a market for these?

Mine came at stock which i think is 2.6Ghz, but ive heard they are really good for overclocking, well over 4Ghz?

Still a worthy CPU? or time to toss it on the scrapheap.....

It can easily handle games as well as the new gen, just overclock it, slap a decent GPU in with it and you are gold. Got several friends that still use this CPU to great effect.

I am using that same CPU at 3.85 GHz maximum temp is 72, that is the maximum speed I will go to regarding that temp reading, running mine with 2 * 7970's one is xfx another is gigabyte X3 and 12 gig off memory, take a better look at my specs here http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/user/SIEGE2/

at my current spec I think I will have this same PC for another 2 years at least.. bought this cpu m/b memory "6GB" on Order Date: 21 May, 09, 2:12 pm from OC uk then.

maximum safe temp for this CPU should be no more than 70 C btw

Aim for 4Ghz, most D0's can achieve this.

^ this, I wouldn't expect 4.2GHz would work on every D0, but 4GHz seems to be good for most. Mine has been running at 4GHz for ~3 years now.

The i7 920 is a heat beast compared to sandy bridge though. You'll be pushing 200W of heat unless you are very lucky with voltages, so make sure your cooler is suitable.

My D0 runs at ~ 85C under prime with a titan fenrir in a very well ventilated case. I'd be happier at 80C, but it's still going strong.

Its trial and error really, each one is different.

Mine for example with HT on overclocks to 3.8 GHz stable at 1.275 vcore and hits around ~65° in prime 95. But when I push it to 4 GHz it needs 1.4 vcore and the temps soar to 90°, which is a bit much for daily use. But I've read other people hitting 4.2 GHz seemingly without any issue at all.

With a D0 stepping model you should be able to push it straight to ~3.6 GHz, then after that move up in increments until you find a good balance for 24/7 operation. When overclocked they are still very strong CPU's, easily capable of keeping up with the newer models in gaming and general use tasks.

How do i find out if it's the stepping model? - and what are the benefits of a stepping model over a normal D0?

all it says in dxdiag/speccy is i7 920 [email protected] Ghz

it'll reach 4.2ghz on air,any higher youll need custom water

it depends on the cpu tbh,d0 or not, some are voltage hoggs and some arnt, same with temps

A cracking cpu, i swapped out a 4.2ghz i7 920 DO for the cpu in sig. In some games i play, it's actually been a slight downgrade. Mine was a pretty cool runner as well, 69c max under 100% load, cooled by an alpenfohn k2.

Been running my 920 D0 at 4Ghz with 6GB for 3 years now and am yet to feel the need to upgrade. Swapped out my original GPU for dual 7970s when I moved to gaming at 2560x1440 and the PC's not failed to run anything at max.

I reckon I've got another couple of years on this yet unless something startling happens in the mean time.

I've mine at 3.7GHz on Air, could go to 4GHz if wanted, but I use it on long load times for CPU rendering.

Upgraded to 3090k this week.

They're still good cpus; If you run one overclocked there's nothing new that's worth the cost of upgrading to, short of moving to a 6core/Extreme cpu.

I never had a board/cpu combo that couldn't reach 4Ghz, and i had 6 920 and 4 different boards (1 was the cheapest you could buy).
on air keeping it cool and still quiet was a struggle but high end air now days should handle it ok.

People saying 4.2Ghz on air are being incredibly optimistic.

Average attainable for a D0 is 4Ghz give or take 50Mhz in either direction with a top end air cooler.

4.2Ghz is very unlikely even on water.
