can you see what network it is connected to via the phone i.e wifi? also can you open a browser in the background to navigate to his access point to mess with a setting or 2? hehe

Giving him plenty of time to ditch it, of course. Chances of you getting it back 1) at all 2) in one piece 3) working are very slim, I would say.

This happened to a mate of mine only recently. He and the police tracked him using findmyiphone but found the phone smashed on the ground and never got the thief.
