I thought that, They look more like boxing injuries. Was thinking maybe snowball fighting was some sort of nickname for a boxing event, but apparently its an actual snowball fight :eek:

But searching 1893 and snowball fighting, gives hits on google such as

"3 Princeton sophomores pose after a brutal, rock-laced snowball fight, 1893"

So yeah, quite possibly a little bit more than snow.
