7970 Matrix Platinum 120hz & 144hz

Probably a stupid question but can someone explain the following.

GPU is at idle.

Monitor @120hz the GPU core clock is 300 & the memory clock is 600

Monitor @144hz the GPU core clock is 500 & the memory clock is 6600?

The GPU needs to do more work for 144Hz, so it'll register as a load making the GPU up clock.

Thought that could possibly be the reason.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think you can use 3rd party software to adjust the point it up clocks to avoid it happening.
