My recent rental car (warning a few pictures and long!!)

To summarise my views:

- Nice car
- V8 was definitely worth it for two days hire. Might as well do it properly for the romance of a V8 for an extra 100 quid compared to the V6 (assuming the V6s really are only 25 quid per day?!).
- I don't follow your reasons for not choosing a convertible..there were three of you? Is that a luggage space issue then? Also it didn't get warm at night...did you never drive in the day or something :p.

Yeah it was through hertz, the only tip I would suggest is pay the extra for a sat nav if you dont have one, the strip can be big and confusing it sometimes has 6 or 7 lanes per side and you can easily be in a lane which goes left turn only. If you are staying on the strip then you pick up the car, make 3 right turns and you are on the strip which makes it easy.

Just remember you can turn right on a red light unless specifically told not to. However be careful as pedestrian crossings can be on green at the same time so you need to give.

Don't hire a sat nav through your rental company, it costs a fortune! Go on eBay and there's loads of people here in the UK that offer sat nav rental for the US. You get it a couple of days before you go and post it back when you get back. Only costs about 25quid for two weeks. Again if you're only renting for two days this doesn't apply.

Which road is the video taken on?

It was taken at Red Rock Canyon scenic drive. :)

Part of it was luggage, we collected from the airport so we needed the space. It was also late October so not super hot in the evening (around 12-15oC) I also didn't think it was fair on the poor person in the back :p

About that for longer term rentals, yea. Not tried for a few days. Paid £380 for mine for 16 days.

And the roof came off. Which, driving up the Strip in Vegas at night, I'd have needed a 3 cylinder diesel under the bonnet before I'd have wanted to give that up for a V8 hardtop :D

Yeah I cheated on that a little as on my last trip to Vegas I had a drop top vette for that reason. It was awesome and something I would consider strongly if it was my first/only trip there.

Awesome car and great writeup.

Trouble is I cannot agree that its good value. You paid exactly 3 times as much per day as my V6 Convertible cost - which still had a good 300bhp. Just cannot see the value in that, especially as most of your driving in the States is sat on the Freeway with the cruise on and frankly for the times when it isn't 300bhp in a rental car is hardly going to make you wish you had tripled your costs for an extra 100bhp :p

I can't see how you can emphatically have come to the conclusion that OcUK was wrong. It doesn't even look that different to the V6 :p

I guess if you only had it for a day or something then the fact its 75 quid not 25 quid is no big deal but for a proper length of time it's just laughably expensive for what extra it offers.

But can you actually still get the V6 for £25 a day? When I was looking not that long ago for a Mustang it was about £300 a week...

I have just looked and right now (as of 2mins ago) Hertz price for a week in sept for LAX pickup and return is £169 pre pay including total loss damage waiver. Nothing more to pay bar fuel.

£24/day....

Well, thats a driver insurance excess, you cant compare apples and pairs :)

IIRc when i was under 25 i was paying $25/day excess, so about £110/week.

rossk26 is under 25 so I guess that's why it's more for him.

I think I was doing quotes for being 25, as that will be this summer, and I originally planned to go around October this year...

Can't complain at the quote Jez has got though! £24 a day, I would take the V6 in a heartbeat over the £75 a day V8.

The Corvette is definitely worth the upgrade cost if you do fancy an upgrade. A car good enough that you'd actually own one over here which is saying something in comparison to the Mustang :p

That's pretty good, airport too. Locally (SJC), I'm looking at about $300 + young drivers fees for a week so about £200.

Us Brits get ridiculous rates on US hire cars with all insurance included, too. It's usually much cheaper than renting as a local for some reason.

I wonder if I could just book and pay for rentals with my UK card and get away with it...
