2nd car - BMW 320d - opinions? things to look out for before we get it?

Along with everything else that comes along with owning a "nicer" car.

Had the pleasure of finding a massive bulge in a 225 45 17 sport contact 3 yesterday. That's the 3rd otherwise perfectly good Tyre I've had to replace this year (2012) at £120 a pop due to punctures or damage. Seriously annoyed about it but its one of those things - you're probably looking at close to half the cost for your fiesta

Nothing to do with my car being diesel but anything you buy that's bigger and or "better" than the fiesta will be the same

So what do normal 30 something year olds get when buying another car? usually budget of around 1500-2k, which is exactly what budget this is in.
What kind of car should i get? ive said i dont want to keep the fiesta if i dont have to. i earn 600 a month, 220 on fiesta insurance, or 300 on bmw insurance. still live with parents obviously.

For example, my parents bought an X reg 1.9 focus turbo diesel, been a great runner, easily tops 58mpg on the journeys we have done. 1200 quid, bit over priced but its been worth every penny. not all cars that age are ****e?

I just want something more powerful, better, faster. something thatll give a decent return on miles per gallon.
Something that is "cool" and not a 1.2!

E36 M3. Wait, no no no!!

Cheap / (fast, cool) / reliable

Theyre mutually exclusive, you wont see them all together at the same time, it blows your E46 out the water somewhat.

It wont be cheap to run due to the repairs, its not fast, it might be reliable if you throw money at it

Keep the fiesta

For a start you dont need a diesel as you dont save much at all on 10k miles a year, which opens up a lot more sensible cars.

The focus is a great car - if you want an upgrade from your fiesta then a Focus 1.6 or 2.0 petrol is completely appropriate

Focus sounds like a perfectly good car to buy.

No not all cars of that age are rubbish and falling to bits - but alongside the fact the car will almost certainly need a bit of love you've also got the BMW factor added in.

Don't know what's going on in these Young Dudes heads these days.
Why would any Young lad rather drive an old Derv taxi than a little revvy Fista ?

What do I know anyway I'm old. :p

I was going to suggest a Focus but they're hardly 'cool'. Certainly no cooler than a Fiesta.

You've been driving for two months and you have a fairly low budget. Do you really want to spend half of your monthly income on insurance? Just wait until you have 1 year NCB and keep saving until then. Save that £80 a month and you'll be able to spend more on the next car.

Could you get insured on a E36?

If you really want to do it then you might as well get what you want and keep us updated, sometimes it's easier to learn from your own mistakes rather than learning from other people's - not trying to be condescending or anything.

you must be old if you think someone wants to drive a fiesta vs a bmw.

Focus's are not cool at all, its economical, yes, but not even close to being cool.
ok, so in petrol form, what would be a suitable candidate?

Nothing wrong with wanting a BMW, but wanting an 11 year old diesel BMW......no thanks!

Given we clearly dont understand what's cool, why dont you name some cars which are "cool" and we'll tell you if they're any good. BMW is a no, so ignore those.

wut

I reckon you can find an E36 M3 for £2k. Shouldn't need much work, just some part worns and petrol. Insurance should only be about £500 a month.

:p Yes I am old but I obviously have more taste than you if you think an old BMW Derv is cool.

I'd lay money you'll chuck an M badge on the back & ride through town with your Joe cool cruising arm hanging out the window. :p

You are 18 not 30something, by the time you are 30something you are likely to have a much bigger budget for a car. If you've got more than £1500-£2k then it's much easier to buy a nice BMW. Lots of us on here like BMW's, I have one myself, but if you don't do it right it's just a massive pain and you end up driving around in an expensive broken old shed just so you could tell all your mates you have a BMW.

We all had cars people would perceive as 'naff' at 18, too. Thats just how it works. You pass your test, you drive uncool cars for a few years, your insurance then gets sensible, you get a job etc etc, then bingo - its time to splash out on something nice.

Only something actually nice, not something that was nice 10 years ago before it was ruined by a succesion of owners who think tyres for 50 quid are fine.

No, you are right - lots of £1500 cars are fine. The Focus is a good car.

I think the very fact you have to spend £300 a month just on insurance should put you off. That is a crazy amount of money to pay for insurance, even if you are 18.
