Steam gets almost all the PC games sales now..How do you feel about this ??

90% of PC games are junk?
I wouldn't be surprised if about 90% of them were junk

There really are only a handfull of good games released each year..

Open the steam store and then click on the games tab and then choose a category
and then come back and tell us how much you think is mainly junk....:D

Fox]I don't like this, and never have. Steam has a monopoly on the PC retail market and this is good for nobody but Steam. Just check the prices of new releases on Steam - they are usually more expensive than traditional retailers despite nothing like the overheads. You can't blame them from a business perspective but it amazes me that consumers lap this up and even pipe up to defend Steam when people like the EU say 'Hang on a minute...'.
Publishers set the prices. EA cut Steam out by setting up Origin and pulling all their games over to there because they weren't happy with Steam's cut, plus they couldn't agree on flexibility of DLC.
Digital content should have the same ownership rights as a normal boxed copy, so I've got no issue with what Germany is exploring with Valve.

Fox]The only real benefit to me of Steam is not having to faff around finding patches. But then all that really is, is a fix for a problem that shouldn't have occured anyway - the 'ship it broken, let the customer test it and fix it through patch' thing. Great.
At least Steam doesn't charge $100,000+ per patch like XBL does...

Infact, XBL is a lot worse than Steam in nearly every regard, freedom wise. I have no faith in EA at all, so Origin has remained on my ****list of software not to install. This has meant I haven't bought Battlefield 3 and won't be buying SimCity either.

You guys are making it sound like steam is the only place where you can buy most of the games when there are so many other places to buy keys from.
This too... Gamers Gate, GOG and loads of other services...

I hardly ever buy from Steam directly, only really if something is cheap in the sale.

This year the sales were lackluster and i have to say, other online game key retailers have better deals.

Obviously i use the Steam client a lot and prefer to buy Steam keys but it is a very good client that just works.

About 8+ years ago the money from sales of PC games use to go to 1000's of different PC games retailers (shops).
But now with most PC game sales only being bought through steam all that money is mainly only going to a single company...

Do you feel this is really fair ??

(This question is nothing to do about the money that still goes to the game developers)

Dunno about you but all my local game stores stopped selling pc games 10+ years ago and GAMES selection was always poor.

It is because many people are ignorant or have some misguided sense of loyalty. Buy it at the cheapest place: that is how the system works. Steam's prices appear vastly overinflated much of the time and as other sites manage to do it cheaper, buy from them.

I really don't get the Steam (and Valve) circlejerk. Some people here have such an infatuation with them it makes Apple fanboys appear casual...

Speaking from experience retailing PC games, it was always a massive faff. Every time a big release came out probably 50% of them would come back 'faulty', mostly because it simply didn't run with the users PC. They didn't sell particularly well in the first place but the level of returns was simply horrendous. This is why most retailers stopped giving over large amounts of space to PC.

It didn't sell, and when it did, it was a pain.

Whereas with Steam once you've bought it, they ignore you, rather than give you a refund if it doesn't run on your PC or is otherwise broken :p

It might not be fair but they offer the best service, way above and beyond that of the competition, so it's not a surprise.

? best service? Just what are we getting from Steam that we actually need?

I was happy paying my money and taking home the big box game with manual, discs, posters, reference card and other stuff inside.

Thats it. I dont need anything else.

I also remember playing pc games before patches became common. They just worked...

Seems to me Steam is a bit like the salesman telling you - you need that new car he is selling and you can only buy spare parts from him because of all sorts of spurious reasons but most of the reasons suit him, not you. Your life just becomes more difficult and controlled...by him.

Before this...you were free..

Me too. The only reason I now don't do this as much is because I cannot. The last game I bought was Fary Cry 3. It's retail boxed, but associated with some stupid UPlay account I don't want.

Im glad things are on steam now. I have a game downstairs which i got in box, i think its deus x or rise and fall, not sure.

Anyway, the box came with 4 disks each required to install the bloody thing. So in no way was it an option to stick it in and just wait to finish, you'd have to check every hour or so to see if the disk is done so you can move onto the next, it just took ages. I know this was a while ago where downloading full games was a bit inconceivable, but it was still a pain in the money maker.

Im happy to use steam, yes, its not ideal for other retailers but i dont want disks laying around cluttering the place, dont want to hunt for a different game to play and then take 30 mins to install it.

I dont tend to buy games at full price because i can wait,im still waiting to get black ops 2 :)

Steam is perfect for me,one program 100's of games.

Got over 100 games with 60 installed.

Cant be any easier can it ?

The downside of this is that once they have a monopoly we all suffer.

Compare the previous sales to the recent ones. They have no reason to price competitively.

Most of the games I have bought recently have not been from steam itself but I have used it enter the key into.

Long terms we suffer.

Its not really fair but at the end of the day I like having all my games in one place with only having to remember one username and password. If I change PCs, etc. I can just loging and start downloading anything I want with minimum faff and these days steam is fairly lightweight on performance/storage footprint and relatively well designed/featured.

I've not played ME3, BF3 (other than the odd go on other people's PCs) or FarCry3 (due to uplay rather than not being on steam) due to these reasons even tho I'm really interested in those games :S

If only companies like Microsoft or EA could bring out a realistic, competitive alternative.

Oh well.
