Type 45 Destroyer Visit

A bit of a carrier heading past a T45.

What a crappy Destroyer

The Type 23s was originally a submarine hunting ship that got fitted with many new bells and whistles (Seawolf, Harpoon, etc) that made it able to do pretty much anything.

Same will happen to the 45s, bear in mind these are brand new - the 23s are as old as me, the ship I was on was getting kitted out 22yrs into its life with new gear!

If I remember correctly the name "destroyer" for tis class of ships was originally "submarine destroyer", their envisaged role (albeit back at the start of the last century :) )

Is it just Dauntless that has been commissioned so far? Aren't we due another 2?

All 6 are afloat (of the 12 we were supposed to have). Daring, Dauntless, Diamond and Dragon are commissioned. Defender and duncan will be commissioned shortly.

not quite - they were originally torpedo-boat destroyers, their role was to kill the torpedo boats which tried to close on capital ships and torpedo them. In a way their role is similar now as it is to provide air defence capacity for a task force.

The T26 which is going to be the replacement for the T23s will have strike length VLS for Perseus/Scalp/Tomahawk.

IMO its more like a AEGIS Cruiser than a classic Destroyer. TBH these days battleships, Cruisers and Destroyers are support ships than front line pounders. Air power is where it's at now and this is an anti air ship which we need greatly.

Duncan?! Who came up with that one? HMS Duncan! Daring, Dauntless & Defender all sounds like good ships. Dragon sounds cool but doesn't really fit in, Diamond isn't great, but Duncan, wtf!

Was just about to post very similar. They're mostly passable, Diamond doesn't really work as that's what chavs say when they like something and it's also not very scary, I bet half the ships in the Chinese navy are called Dragon, but Duncan...is just terrible.

HMS Damnation would be better.

Not sure about that either. Damnation reminds me of a 1930s headmaster. "Damnation Jennings, will you stop picking your nose".

Been on the Dauntless when she was being built at govan, uncle is a spark at yarrows, saw the launch of the portland aswell.

Its all about the radar systems on the type 45's.
