Type 45 Destroyer Visit

The other weekend I was up at Victory Gate in Portsmouth doing work in the Dockyard, Drove past a few 45's, 23's and Ark Royal on my way to the Dry dock. I was literally in awe of what I was seeing!

I've got a mates who is an officer on dauntless.

Cool ship :) as for land attack.

The destroyer protects the fleet from air threats. the carriers bring the pain to the land with planes.

Its all about the radar systems on the type 45's.

Had a friend in the RN until a couple of years ago, quite a few lovely stories about that Sampson unit, including picking up things it shouldn't be. Not a lot of love for the F-35 either.

'you see, the carrier will have a radar profile of a trawler from a distance and the f-35 a seagull, so the enemy wont know were coming, all they will see is a trawler being followed by a flock of formation flying supersonic seagulls. It will look completely normal.'

It's worth looking around one of these. They wouldn't let us see the engines unfortunately, but did go around the main bridge and the secondary one.

They look flimsy - impressive anti-missile defence but apt to sink if it gets hit. The computers I saw had Windows XP screen savers up. Slightly worrying that. Overall I left feeling quite disillusioned with the boat, though it's good to know roughly what the cutting edge looks like.

Quick snap from today after she came along side.

The vessel is immaculate, the Ops Room still smells of new carpet.
