Dead MacBook Pro

Hi,

A friend of mine was given a MacBook Pro by his landlord as it was being thrown away by the tenants of another house he looks after. It looks to be reasonably new and cosmetically not too bad but it doesn't switch on properly.

He's asked me to take a look to see if anything can be salvaged from it. He's taken it to the Apple store but as it's not registered to him, they can't help. I think when it's plugged in it turns on but after the Apple logo appears on the screen, switches off again. I don't have a charger for it unfortunately.

Where would I start with something like this? If it's water damaged, are there indicators like on an iPhone? I know nothing about laptop components but I'm comfortable building and diagnosing problems with desktop PC's etc.

If it's completely dead, does it have any value as spares?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

Apple store story sounds a bit dodge as does the whole acquisition story. So he has the charger but it doesn't work when it's plugged in? Press the battery level indicator on the left hard side to see how much battery you have at the moment. You're not going to get far without the charger.

yep, Apple doesn't care who ever the machine/devices is registered to, long as the serial no. is still in warranty.

I dont know why you can't get support, I've taken in my dad's MBP and my current MBP when it was registered to the person I bought it off.

Sounds like a load of rubbish to me.

Whats the model number/serial number on the bottom?

Wack it in there ^ and tell us what it says it is.

Says it's a mid 2009 13 inch MBP. Technical Support and Repairs Coverage expired.

Nothing happens when I press the battery indicator. He has a charger as they already have a MBP.

I will ask him about the Apple store thing, I work next to the one in Oxford Circus so can take it in tomorrow and I have a charger at work I can use.

Nothing is happening when I try and switch it on but I seem to remember on Saturday night when he showed me that it did turn on without the charger.

Story sounds suspect :p Landlord gives away free laptop, Apple won't look at it because not in your name, except they never care about that anyway..
