BMW 1 series, anything I should know?

That's fine and is fair enough tbh, just don't lumber yourself with the 1 series as an only choice. If you drive one and still prefer it then fair enough but definitely check out the others first as they at least offer a level of practicality and fit/finish that the bmw doesn't quite have.

The 1.4 has always been particularly asthmatic though whereas the 1.4t is a cracking little engine even in its most modest output. Reckon that'll be well out of budget in either the golf or Audi though

I'm sure the op would get on fine with a 1.6 petrol

Edit - the 120ish tsi looks doable, definitely have a look

Sorry to bump but thought I'd do that over making a new thread!

3 series, they look incredible! And I can get one for 6k which is 90-100k miles and 06' plate.

Worth it? I'll only be doing 50-70 miles max a week so the petrol cost wouldn't be an issue in a 2ltr, and maintenance wise, anything of note?

, just want something reliable

So really this isn't the case is it if you are now looking at a £6k E90. Nothing wrong with a £6k E90 (Well, in theory, but this is the bottom of the E90 market so I'd be very careful), but you must be prepared to spend more money to keep it going and be likely to encounter more issues than you would with something newer for £6k. Personally I'd always take 'fixing a BMW' over 'not fixing a Vauxhall' but you specifically stated you wanted reliability and that performance and engine size isn't something that interests you, so why buy a 3 Series? What would you get for the increased ownership costs?

Because they look nice, its become apparent that there is a stigma with wanting to buy a certain brand, so be it! However, seemingly not what im after based on what im looking for vs responses here.

I am asking questions because im uneducated in the matter, and as people have been helpful with the prior mention of a 1 series, thought it would be acceptable to ask about the 3! People learn by some means, and I thought I would be able to do that here.

Thanks for those who were kind enough to input into the original query and in particular to fox who raises good points and doesnt simply condesend

Would you consider Volvo a premium brand? C30 (3 door) & S40 both in R-Design spec are loaded with toys, lovely interior, just about the most comfortable seats you'll ever sit in (not that you'll be in it long enough to worry, with you mileage!) and good value - not sure why they depreciate as much as they do. 2.0l engine is the minimum I'd recommend, but again, with your commute and from what you've said, the 1.8 would be sufficient (I had the 1.6 petrol S40 R-Design Sport, smashing looking car inside and out but diabolical performance!). Perhaps worth a look - bet you can't stop yourself checking out the C70 though!
