Maybe I am over thinking this, but is it really as simple as ramping up the core speeds ?

I checked in afterburner and the core voltage(mv) slider is locked, the power limit % slider is open as are the rest.

So my first question is do I need to unlock the core voltage slider and if so how do you do this ? I thought by default reference boards had this unlocked ? Checking the card I see it has the 6 pin and 8 pin power connectors, so would I be right in assuming this is on a 7970 reference PCB ?

I am going to get this under water soon, but running some tests on air first to see how far it will go and this should give me a decent starting point when it goes under the block

thanks scotty.

Followed that to the letter and it worked a treat.

Is there a thread here that shows what sort of clocks are achievable or is it just a case of learning by doing.

Also what is the safest core voltage you can use before things start frying. Out of the box the settings are

core volt 1030mV
Core 880
Mem 1250

Trial and error

See how far you can go on the core on stock voltage b4 it crashes
then same on memory.

Voltage I wouldn't go above 1.2volts on air(as its not my card) :D

Keep an eye on temps - below 70 would be my target on air

Hopefully there will be others who have this card who can be of more help.

I am guessing 3Dmark is the best bench tool to test or is kombustor decent enough for rough and ready testing ?

thanks
my 2500K is at stock currently so not sure if that affects the scores ?

ran the unigine benchmark with the following settings

coreclock 1054
memclock 1300
corevoltage 1031 (stock out of the box)

scored
Powered by Unigine Engine

Heaven Benchmark v3.0 Basic

FPS:
73.8

Scores:
1858

Min FPS:
28.4

Max FPS:
160.2

with these settings (same as on the official OCUK benchmark thread)

Render:
direct3d11

Mode:
1920x1080 4xAA fullscreen

Shaders:
high

Textures:
high

Filter:
trilinear

Anisotropy:
4x

Occlusion:
enabled

Refraction:
enabled

Volumetric:
enabled

Tessellation:
normal

The highest temp I hit was 68°C

Tried again with core on 1100 and it crashed. So I think I found the max core on stock volts. Which in itself is amazing, I got an approx 20% OC on the core without doing anything :)

I think under water these cards might be good for quite a bit more ?

I have a gigabyte wf3 7950
I get 1000/1450 stock volts

1150/1450 @1.225v this is my 24/7 oc

I can go higher but feel there is no real world gain going higher.

i did some benchmarks on my card which may hopefully help u here is the results(all done on auto fan setting:

stock
900 core 1250 memory
fp's:65.2
score: 1643
min:43
max:141.1
temp:54c

stock volts
1000core 1250 memory
fps:70.5
score:1775
min:45.9
max:149.2
temp:55c

@1.225v
1150 core 1250 memory
fp's:74.4
score:1874
min:8.7
max:153.4
temp:62c forgot to put slider on 20% on this run!

@1.225v
1150 core 1450 memory
fp's:77.3
score:1948
min:26
max:173
temp: 62c core vrm's at this memory speed where at 67c and 69c readings from gpuz on memory.#

what i find weird is the min fp's drops!any reason for this? is it bad?
All these benchmarks are done using the setup from the official heaven benchmark thread.

I have to say when I had a Msi 7950 the scores where higher with lower clocks than with this card on higher clocks!! Anyone know why this could be? I've seen this with other people Msi vs other 7950's also.

It is a bit odd. Throttling perhaps? Or would that not affect max fps as well?

At 1150/1400 mine (not MSI) scored around 2000 too fwiw (12.11beta).

Hmm good question ! My msi v2 with 1150/1800 will get a score of 2140. However, sent it back today because of temperatures and asked for a gigabyte replacement, so il get back to you on that xD

Yeah that would be interesting to know.
Wow 1800 on the memory!!!! Was that under water? Is that even safe to run? or was it purely a benchmarking oc?As when I had mine the vrm's always got way to hot which restricted the oc (I had two from the supposed faulty batch)

I would have thought it would have affected max fps my i5 2500k is running @4.4ghz so wouldn't of thought it would bottleneck or am I wrong?

Nope not under water just air and stock memory volts. That was my24/7 oc while playing games like bf3/ wow. But for some reason the memory might of been a fantastic clocker but the core did not like pit past 1150. I took it back as on stock settings it would idle at 27 ( which is perfect) but under load it would reach 73c and vrms 81cwith auto fan - reference cards get better temps lol :/

With the overclock vrms would reach 103 and core mid 80s. Also to maintain this oc i had to have on70% which sounded like a jet engine, started to annoy me. And not to mention this was all measured in a 19c room... Can't imagine how it will be in the summer with a 30c heat wave !

Did not like that at all so I asked for a wf3 heard its a great cooler!

Yep I had the same issues with heat but my memory crapped itself way before 1800 think it was like 1400 maybe even less the vrm's would screw the overclock up if they go over 72c! It would just fail I got 1150 out of the core but temps where just stupid.

You will be very happy with the cooler mate its very quiet and very very efficient I sadly got a low ASIC quality card 58.9 I think so its starting volts where nearly 1.1! Mine uses 1.225 to get to 1150 on the core I have had it upto 1200 can't remember the voltage now but was below the max of 1.3v (only did this for one run on catzilla I was in the top ten for that run but now into like 15th place last time I looked) I think it was 1.238v I think!.
Even with my volts and oc the card really does run cool 62c ma core 67c max on vrm's and I only have it set on auto fan so could bring the temps down even more if I tried tbh.
I personally think 1150/1450 seems to be the most beneficial oc from 7950's beyond that it just seems to be for benchmark scores and no real world difference but I could be wrong!

When you get the card have a look at the cooler it really does look awesome.
When does the new beast arrive?

Hehe thanks for the input I had my card sent off today and bailey said he will dispatch the gigabyte when receives mine so I'd say Thursday? Kinda looking forward to the low noise from now on :D Impressed with the amount of volts your running through the card and your getting a max of 62c :0 with my msi if I put the volts to 1.2 my temps on the core would reach above 85 easy (vrms 100) and that's with 75% fan! Your getting 62c with auto profile :D - shows how bad a faulty batch is.

With ASIC quality that all confuses me lol. My msi had 92% but I need 1.2 vddc for 1150 on the core :/ I just checked the ocuk website have you seen the new boosted edition 7950 from msi with 960 MHz? It looks like they taken away the 7970 pcb

It's not coming today Chris :/ they accidentally sent out an msi replacement which was in transit for this morning. Quickly emailed to say I asked for a gigabyte 7950 and they are sending out another one today. Il come back here tomorrow with my overclock and bench results xD
