MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr III OC V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card [R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC (V2)]

Checking various sources it would appear that this card uses the 7970 reference board due to the 8/6 pin PCIe power confiuration and from looking at some visuals.

Can someone confirm this is the case and if so which of the blocks that OCUK have would fit this as there are a whole bunch of 7970 reference card blocks but they all have slightly different descriptions so I am really not sure.

Its this card here

I have contacted both MSI and OCUK trying to confirm this can take a 7970 reference water block and no joy from either of them. OCUK told me they didn't have any information on the board layout and MSI were about as helpful as a chocolate teapot !!!!

So can someone confirm exactly what waterblock I need to get for this as I am getting heavily conflicting reports from different sites I look at with some saying that regardless of the 8/6 power plugs its still a 7970 reference boasrd, some sites saying its a reference 7950 board, some saying its a non reference 7970.

I am still kind of shocked that one of the techies at OCUk don't actually know ? even more shocked by MSi response which was a simply we don't support the use of waterblocks on our cards !!! and then didn't actually answer the question.

Try ek cooling configurator?

this card does not appaer on EK config for selection. I t was my first port of call. EK config only shows the MSI 7950 cards with the 6pin/6pin config. You can see this when you examine the photo.

This is why I came here and asked MSi because the card was redesigned in the later parts of 2012 and this is why there is such contradicting information on the web as no one actually seems to know what they are talking about appart from those who actually have the card and have fitted blocks.

However I would fully expect MSI to know the layouts of the boards they push out of the factory and I would at least expect OCUK to have a tech spec from MSi on the product ?

thanks. Reading that its pretty certain that the 8/6 PCIe boards are 7970 reference so ref waterblock will fit.

MSI are pure comedy gold. the emails I exchanged with their support guys were off the planet. They sent me a link to the EK configurator saying this will tell you waht PCB the card is. I aksed them why the hell they didn't know what boards they used in their own manufacturing process !!!

Seriously you would have though they woul dbe able to answer a relatively straight forward question like this........ ???

Incidently EK configurator is not right as it shows the 7950 reference board and not the 7970 PCB variant. Its doubly confusing because MSI used the same model number also so even though there are 2 variants out there the modle number is still R7950 Twin Frozr3GD5/)C (V2). Which makes no sense as technically the models are different !!!!!!

oh no, to make matters worse there are 3 variants. luckily it's not hard to tell them apart. there's the original, then the v2 with a 7970 pcb and then the new "be" that takes the design back to a 7950 pcb, using a boost edition 7950 bios. the manufacturer's code tells you which version it is, but msi aren't explicit about it in advertising... or in support emails either apparently

haven't headr anything back from ScottiB, but I reckopn base don what I have read / seen, I can pull the trigger on getting the 7970 reference block for this card.

However here is my experiences of contacting various manufacturers to get to the bottom of this

OCUK - informed me they didn't have any specifics or board layout schems which as a retailer is understandable. Suppose I can't really fault them on this, but the forums were certainly helpful

MSI - Words cannot begin to describe how uterly pathetic their support was / is. I never got a straight answer from them, they couldn't even confirm if the card was on a 7970 reference PCB even after I provided them with every last bit of detail they needed down to part numbers. They fobbed me off with the usual 'we don't support the use of waterblocks on our products'. They sent me links to non MSI based resources such as forums outside of their control stating that the info was there.

I found the whole customer experience from MSI to be poor at best and shocking at worst. Even though they might have 3 year warranties, their after sales support is gash. I certainly won't be getting another MSI product at my next upgrade (not that they would give a flying carp)

EKWB customer support - Sent these guys a mail thinking as the manufacturer of the blocks that fit the widest number of cards / configs on the market they surely would know. Their reply was equally shocking, they actually informed me that they had never heard of a 7950 being constructed on a 7970 reference PCB !!!

so bottom line is I'll get what I think is right and if its not it goes back under DSR
