Hi guys, I have an older i7 930 OC rig and decent case bought from here about 2-3 years ago. I bought so I can upgrade when its struggling and the AMD GFX card fan is sucking in small rodents when on BF3, plus I get occasional blue screens of death on the hard drive and dont know why.

So, I thought I could get a 250GB SSD drive and an up to date AMD GFX card. Anyone see any issues doing this (I'm not technical) and if none do I need to install an OP system on the SSD drive?

thanks

No problem upgrading the AMD gfx card I would get this GPU and this SSD if budget allows:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
1 x Plextor M5 Pro 256GB Extreme Series Solid State Drive - (PX-256M5P) £185.99
Total : £437.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

You don't HAVE to install the OS on the SSD but that is the main benefit imo. So I would 100% do it. SSDs for gaming don't make THAT much of a difference. They're starting to contribute in games like BF3 though so but having the OS on it is 100% something you should do.

You could get one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW) £209.99
1 x Plextor M5 Pro 256GB Extreme Series Solid State Drive - (PX-256M5P) £185.99
Total : £405.58 (includes shipping : £8.00).

and one of these:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £239.99
1 x Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £161.99
Total : £413.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

Do you have a budget at all?

Thanks for the quick replies fellas:eek:

I'm really crap at doing these things hence why I paid OC for my system, so apologies for the following basic, maybe stoopid questions.....

Budget is probably around the £500 mark.
I dont think OC gave me the windows 7 pro disc to install on the SSD:confused:
As I get frequent crashes I'd like to transfer from the current seagate 500GB drive to the SSD drive, is there an easy way to transfer all files/progs etc or is that a really stoopid question:o

Anything else I need to do or know?

thanks

I think Wu-Tang has given you a great choice, I'd go with that.

Just download the ISO file and install via USB stick, if you have one. If not, burn to disc..

Thanks, great link, I have a usb stick, is it straightforward putting win7 pro on a new ssd in the same pc? any noddies guide links?

yes, you both went with the Gigabyte HD7950 GFX card so thats the one I'll go for.
Is the plextor ssd better than the samsung, the plextor is cheaper?

P.S Fantstic and quick advice here, thanks fellas and apologies again for the newbie questions but I'd like to do it myself but unless its laid out for me I really wont have a clue what to do. installing the GFX card should be a laugh if I dont break it:D

What make/model power supply do you have ? No use buying a shiny new graphics card if your current psu is garbage :D
