Have most people here worked most of their working lives?

First job 2 months after getting my diploma, had 6 months unemployed when I first moved to the UK at 19, 6 months without a job when I was 21 (but had a massive tax rebate).

Been fully employed all other times.

I have only been unemployed once, and I went to sign on. After making my claim etc. I walked out of the job centre, over the road, and into McDonalds. I started my new job the following morning.

At the time I was a teenager though and had no real financial commitments, these days a McJob wouldn't cover the basics unless I sold up and moved to a smaller house.

I never received any JSA as I went back the next day to tell them I had a job.

Other than that I have been in constant employment for eleven years now (since 16) bar that one incident.

Haven't worked for about 2 of my 18 employable years. One and half was spent out of my own pocket, while the first six months from school were spent on the dole. Not proud of that, but I wasn't in a good place back then... Being on the dole didn't help either.

2 major jobs covering 16 years, with other temporary guff thrown in for good measure. Made redundant twice, from the same employer.

On a side note, I don't really consider working without a break all your adult life to be a badge of honour, especially if your more 'blue collar'. It's just a mugs game really.

Worked since 1979.
1st, company 8 years
2nd, 19 years (redundant/heart attack)
3rd, 3 years (redundant)
18 months dole
4th Self employed (driving instructor.. LOL)
5th, 1 year (ill health/heart attack)
been off 4 months

So about 34+ years total. Possibly finished now due to 2nd heart attack. Hence spending empty hours on this forum.

I had worked long enough to have paid up my state pension in full, until the gits changed the rules..

I love how casually you list 'redundant/heart attack'!

I wish you a speedy recovery from your more recent one though!

Left school 2000 (16)
Worked for an agency for 3 years
Employed by company as I was temping at (2003)
Fired (2010)
Worked on/off since (2010-2013)*

*Laid off 3 times.

Going to be another fun year.

You have done enough.

Now your job is to look after your health :)

The application process for my job after university was very protracted and had a rigid start date so I'm ashamed to say I claimed JSA over the summer and had a couple of months of freedom :D

Started working part time when I was still at school for a little pocket money. Then after my A-Levels took a year out where I worked for 6 months. Went to uni, and worked whilst at uni, and during the holidays. And then full time from 2002 to now! I've fortunately never been ill and never missed a day of work. :)

I've worked since leaving school in 1989, I've a few jobs granted - but I've never been on the dole and never claimed any benefits.

I do remember feeling like my world had ended when I was made redundant at 19 years of age (hindsight eh :p) and it took me just over a week to get another job. I've been working for my current employer for just about five years now, my previous employer for 7 years though the past two years i moved to part time hours while studying full time ;)
