Gay Marriage to be Illegal in the Church of England

A Northern Irish MP is stood up right now reading lines from the Bible and banging on about Jesus. It's embarrassing.

Yup its ridiculous. Although i wont say anything else because i dont want to be name and shamed in the atheist thread.

You cant drag me with youuu. :D

Man Ian Paisley is ******* me off. He keeps standing up and making stupid arguments like at the moment where he's he's banging on about what is 'natural', 'biological' and having children.

Funny then that he doesn't oppose infertile heterosexual couples getting married, and does he think that gay marriage being illegal makes gay people think "you know, seeing as I can't get married I might as well become straight and have kids".

Time will show those currently standing arguing agaisnt equal rights for homosexuals in the same light racists who didn't want black people having the same rights are shown now.

I am glad when I am asked by my childern what I did to stop the evils of homophobia and discrimination, I will be able to look them in the face and stand proud behind my stances and work.

What did you do?

To be fair, from what I've seen on BBC Parliament although the house is only half full I'd say 9 out of 10 Tories are supporting this bill. From BBC Breakfast news this morning you'd have thought only the front benches were going to vote for it. Over sensationalism from the media?

It's just the vocal minority in the party, it will be interesting to see just how many vote against it after all the hype surrounding it.

I'm finding some of the opposing members saying "what about my rights" pretty funny. What 'right' is that, the right to interfere in other people's lives to the point where you can restrict what they call their relationship?

Maybe they think gay mariage is to replace straight marriage?

I thought England was a progressive country...I'm absolutely shocked and furious at this decision. I feel like we're stepping back into the Middle Ages, and, frankly, I think it's against human rights to be banned from marriage in a certain location. Reading the news before today I had been thinking that today would be the day that this farce would be turned around....apparently I was too optimistic in thinking that the church could accept people's differing choices.

Edit: Made a mistake, CofE isn't at fault here. Still shocking though, good on them for opposing it, however.

Good, do you want everyone to be the same? if you want the country to be that progressive then there should be no gay only groups. The straight community needs something that sets them apart from the others.

Maybe they think gay mariage is to replace straight marriage?

Replace it in what sense? Do they think this bill is about forcing married heterosexuals to get divorced and get together with someone of the same gender or something?

When we allowed women the vote, did it 'replace' a man's right to vote?

What 'gay only' groups are you referring to?

Eh? What gay-only groups?

Wasn't actually being serious there! It would be the only way "my rights" would be affected by this.

I think a lot of people are opposed to the idea of gay marriage as married couples, in the churches eyes anyway, are allowed to be parents. And they dont like the idea of children being raised by parents of the same gender. As a child brought up by a mother and father, I honestly have no way of knowing what that experience is like. I think I'd prefer to have one parent of each gender though. Thats just my own opinion of course...

What I've always wondered, on a bit of a seperate note, is what makes gay people gay in the first place. I mean I personally am straight. But why am I? Why am I not gay? What makes me different from a gay person or vice versa? Is it some form of bizarre natural selection? The species's way of making sure we dont overpopulate by making some of us not want to reproduce naturally? Is it a genetic disorder? Is it nothing to do with biology and simply a lifestyle choice? Ooooh it makes me wonder!

And for the record. Not homophobic!

MPs have supported David Cameron's plan to allow gay marriage by a majority of 225 votes.

The House of Commons voted by 400 to 175 to give the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Bill despite opposition from a number of prominent Conservative MPs.

A debate on the issue had earlier heard from several Tories who argued the move would undermine marriage, alienate voters and damage the party's election prospects.

Less than two hours before the vote, Mr Cameron recorded a statement defending the bill.

"Today is an important day. I am a strong believer in marriage. It helps people commit to each other and I think it is right that gay people should be able to get married too," he said.

"This is, yes, about equality. But it is also about making our society stronger.

"I know there are strong views on both side of the argument - I accept that. But I think this is an important step forward for our country."

Yeah, but if the local conservative party is anything to go by, then the Conservatives have made a grave error with regards grassroots support. The local Conservative party has had a raft of resignations of party activists and members.

Personally I think there are more important things to concentrate on than redefining marriage....the economy and getting young people into work for one.
