If your comment is going to be, 'Nothing, because I don't believe in religion' then hit the back button now.

I am not religious, but at the same time I recognise the merits of the concept of lent.

What, therefore, are people planning to give up for Lent, as it starts in just over a week.

Current ideas I have include the snooze button on my alarm, and OcUK forums.

I use nothing else in excess, so have no real reason to give anything else up.

Not actually "giving something up" as such, but using it as an excuse to sort out my spending. Finding I'm frittering money away for no reason on various things. Planning on budgeting myself for the entirety of Lent and seeing what I end up spending during that time.

I'd like to avoid the cliché, but what with the need to get my fitness back into gear I can't help but think chocolate would be a good shout. I probably have it almost every day unnecessarily, so it wouldn't be a bad move.

If you like the concept, why wait for all the religious people to do it?

If the snooze button and this forum are the only excessive things, you need to introduce yourself to a little thing called 'Cats on YouTube' ;)

Giving things up.

Time to actually finish some music! I keep stopping and not going back to it, so this month I'm finishing things :)

Probably nothing, I don't eat much crap as it is. Only worthwhile thing I could think of would be coffee, but that's not going to happen! JAVA 4 LYF!

Edit - Scumbag KD recently gets made underboss, shows his dedication to the role by abandoning ocuk for 40 days. :p

Don't worry, snooze button is winning over ocuk right now.

If I went with ocuk, I might actually have to be sociable with flat mates instead of posting on here from my iPad in evenings :p

I shall consider it. It was pretty brutal last year with what I gave up.

Could be booze, fags and various other things I like.

Using my PC, phone etc for anything other than reading important emails, or phone calls e.t.c. I failed miserably last year and lasted one day before I gave up. I will do better this year.
I am far to reliant on all the tech stuff, for fulfilling my life.

What are the merits of Lent, then? Just do it any time, if something needs to change, otherwise it's just highlighting the hilarious lack of self-control which a period of abstinence won't cure.

Because it's an excuse.

Yes, it highlights the person's lack of self control, but if it means they'll change something than it's nothing but a good thing :)
