For the last couple of years we've been with Virgin Media. Currently on the Broadband XL (Up To 60mb) for £21.75 and phone line rental of £14.99 totalling £36.74 (before the very few phone calls we make). I'm now looking to save a few quid.

Couple of questions, their website currently says 'Up To 60mb' is £19.50, £2.25 less than I'm currently paying. If I phone up and ask them to drop me onto the £19.50 tariff - will that lock me into a new 18 month contract?

Secondly, the 'Up To 30mb' package is only £14.50. Apart from the lower peak speed - is there anything wrong with this much cheaper option? And would the change result in a new 18 month contract?

Finally - we're not that far from a BT exchange, is DSL competitive against Virgin Media?

If you asked them to lower the price of your 60mb service, they may ask you to take a contract, but if you simply ask them to drop your speed to 30mb, they wont make you take out a contract, but it wont be as cheap as a brand new 30mb contract. You will save some money though.

The 30mb option is fine if you're not a heavy downloader, and your area doesnt suffer from high utilization during peak hours. You might be better off with 30mb if you'd like to cut the bills down.

How about ditching the landline and using something like Vonage?
Think VM play the usual trick of making BB look cheaper by offering a discount price if you take a bundle with a phone line as well. If you drop the phone line then the BB goes up in price and you'd only svae ~£5 instead of £15

Indeed, not much saving by dropping the land line.
