All dogs to be chipped by 2016

What is the definition of a collar? My dog (Husky) does not have a collar when we take him out, he has a harness?

I take it it's acceptable to attach an ID tag to this when we take him out?

Lol

My dogs came off this week on his walk.. Luckily he has a seperate one attached to his lead. Not sure if it was the collars fault or our dog walker
Damn beagles

Seriously though I've not heard one vet or one pathologist ever mention and associated risks with chipping. Apart from if you dump your dog.

Microchipping
Then
DNA
Then
National register

Maybe you should put the collar on the dog a little tighter and stop assuming that I and others are incapable of doing it correctly.

Vets and pathologists agreeing with it?, that's hardly surprising when they will no doubt be paid for it, probably a nice little earner.

Chipped all my dogs but I don't see what this idea is going to achieve.
You don't need a vet for this task, dog charities do it as well.

Any owner whose dog is found without a chip and can be traced by local authorities will have a short period of time to have the dog microchipped.

The way this is worded it sounds like in the event of your dog being found by the local authorities you then have to get it chipped or pay the fine. If this is the case then most people won't bother and just get their dogs chipped if they're lost and found by 'the wrong person' from their wallet's point of view.

The people this legislation is aimed at will never get their dogs chipped and will deny all responsibility for the animal when it's found thus meaning the entire financial burden will still fall on the state in their cases.

I agree with the Scots on this one:

The Scottish government has said that, while it recognised the benefits of microchipping, there was "no evidence compulsory microchipping would effectively tackle welfare issues".

When I get a dog he'd be getting chipped as would my cats if they went outdoors.

I think its a good idea if the dog were to get lost or something, it would at least help track the owner down if the collar had fallen off and contact details on the chip were up to date.

Health risks are small but they do exist but there are risks with vaccinations and the majority of people routinely vaccinate. Migrating chips are not very common so very small health risk for more piece of mind.

Yep its well know that clinical pathologists working in laboratories get paid for implanting microchips.

Come on your just scaremongering

Its going to be the law so if you want a dog then its going to have to be microchipped.

Most of if not all the vets I've had dealings with (1000+) have a very high level of care. And if they thought there was any chance (other than chip migration or implantation error) of any health issues then I'm sure they would be raising hell.

The BSAVA have been issuing their members questionnaires regarding Microchips for over a decade and any Issues are so few and far between then they would have difficulty ruling out coincidence.

I chipped nearly a thousand field mice for ID purposes over the last 3 years (exactly the same PIT tags as the vets use). If I can get them in a mouse without adverse effects I can't imagine there's anything to worry about with dogs!

Someone's paying for it somewhere, whether directly or indirectly, gauranteed.

I am not scaremongering anything, why would you say that, I have no ulterior motive, which is something I'm not sure I could say about your posts.

I respect your opinion but why do you believe that?

Same reason we have number plates on vehicles so they can be easily identified

Dogs get loose. Collars snap, Leads break. Rabbits run out etc etc accidents happen. Dogs get lost

My dog is chipped, but I don't put on her collar because it mats her hair around the neck.

Control of Dogs Order 1992
This requires that every dog, while in a public place, wears a collar with the name and address of his owner inscribed on it or on a disc attached to it. If a collar is not worn when out in a public place, the dog may be seized by the police and treated as a stray. Also the owner, and any person in charge of the dog permitting him to be in a public place without a collar, will each be guilty of an offence and may be prosecuted and fined

A chip covers this.
