Basically I'm selling my Pd150 Leon as I don't do much mileage to warrant a derv.
I've narrowed it down to several cars within my budget.

Mazda RX8
ep3 Type R (pre facelift)
Clio 182/172
Megan Renault sport

Each have pro's and con's but I am favoring towards the Mazda as its going to be a newer car and probably more reliable than the rest.

I've seen a few with decent mileage (50k-60k) which shows that the car hasn't blown up or if it has it been fixed and now running great.

Just wondering peoples opinion on if its a good idea.

No RX8 is not a good idea, very unreliable, drinks oil, really bad MPG. I think there are quite a few threads on the RX8, but i'm sure most people on here will say the same thing. Clio is a good shout, being biased but take a look at the 190 Celica as well.

How in gods name does the mileage being 50-60k prove that a particular RX8 has not blown up, or has been rebuilt?

It could easily be on the brink of failure, have failed, or it could have been rebuilt and running like arse.

I'd have none of those and find a nice 330ci.

^ This, love mine

Agree with above, RX8 is not a car you buy for reliability and low running costs.

IMHO you have to really want an RX8 to justify buying one. That is not to say they aren't good cars, just don't go into buying one with blinkers on or you are lining yourself up for a potential bankruptcy (exagerated ofc ;) )

Don't want a BMW. Not a big fan if I'm honest. The running cost doesn't really matter as as long as its getting 25mpg that fine with me. Oil isn't an issue as I have a few friends in the motor industry.
I was going to get one of those warranty things that you can buy that covers engines as I know it could cost a fortune to replace.

Your loss. I'd rather have the car with 90% of the driving dynamics of the RX8, but with a proper engine and dependability.

That's the RX8 out then.

Pretty sure even they would get annoyed if you asked them for a litre of oil a month.

Good luck with that on an RX8!

I bet you a tenner they'd say it was down to lack of oil when the engine finally loses all compression and is useless, easy clause to get them out of spending a couple grand on a new engine.

You may have noticed this isn't a widely held view :D

I don't think you'd find a warranty for the engine with all it's known problems, and I suspect that even if you did they would find a way not to pay out. Add to that the catastrophic fuel consumption, the insatiable appetite for oil and the high road tax and you'll see why they're so cheap.

What is your budget roughly?

Buying a newer RX8 is kind of a false economy as you will buy one for 10k today and in a year it could be worth 3-4. You will either be spending fortunes fixing it or loosing fortunes in depreciated.

Id pick the type R out of those if it was my money.

Yet another "what would you recommend as long as its the car I've already decided I want even if everyone says its not a good idea" threads

just in case it hasn't been made clear enough already

MPG = 13 roughly
Oil concumption - 1 litre per month (can't skimp on the oil with this engine either it has to be decent quality stuff, this is not an exageration it actually uses this much oil EVERY month)
engine warranty - no company will actually pay out when this engine lets go (and it will let go)

Nice car though hehe

That's just wrong. They'll do 18-20mpg however they're driven, oil usage varies but seems to average at about 0.5l per 1k. Most aftermarket warranties are crap but if you accept this and read the small print you may be able to get some cover.

I'd have one over everything else on the op's list but that's mainly as I dislike French cars, EP3's have a horrid ride and one of my mates is a head mechanic at Mazda. He's put me off buying one in the past though.

My budget is £3.5K. Like I said theres loads of Clios and Mazdas within that price. Not so many Civics or Megans

Please don't buy an rx8. If you've only got £3.5k to spend what are you going to do if it needs a rebuild in 6 months? An engine rebuild for one of these is thousands and they all need one sooner or later.
