I'm a fan of slow burning detective series, so I've seen most of Morse, Lewis, Frost, et cetera. But I recently got done watching The Wire series and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good American detective series. While I enjoyed The Wire, it went deeper than just the lone detective and into the realms of politics and sociology. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Columbo.

Twin Peaks - starts well enough tho ends up a bit (very) whacked but the first half is definitely under-rated.

If you like Columbo, you'll like Jonathan Creek. It's very tongue in cheek, but a great show, has a lot of heart

+1 for Luther

Chicago Code was a decent show which really went into the politics of policing - there was only one season, but there's no huge cliffhanger.

Southland is one people rave about - personally I couldn't get into it.

Shield and Justified are both excellent shows, although I'm not really sure they'd be what you're looking for - definitely worth a try though.

Death in Paradise is worth a watch as well.

What's that one with Rufus Sewell as the autistic bloke who cracks cases? Was an American remake of a UK series originally starring Patrick Stewart, I believe.

As has been said, though, if you haven't yet watched Luther then you're seriously missing out. The first season is absolute dynamite.

Can't see anything on IMDB for him sounding like that.

But there was Monk, about the OCD detective, though I didn't get into that one personally.

Also another vote for Luther
The modern Sherlock - with Benedict Cumberbatch is also very good. Not enough of them though!

The Chicago Code (only one season but very good).

Monk is a good one for one episode stories.

Not quite the same but you could also try Without a Trace.

If you like it slow, (imo almost unbearably slow at times), then The Killing as recommended above might be for you.
I never reached the end of season 2 though, despite it being pretty good overall. Just too slow for me.

+1 to The Killing. To add to that i'd suggest Southland for a current show but you can't beat Breaking Bad for slow burning yet excellent, from the other side of the fence.

The Eleventh Hour that Pestilence mentioned was one of those that i couldn't get my head around being cancelled, I quite liked it. The Mentalist is good (but more comedic) alternative.
