Thinking of going Vinyl

I'm overwhelmed with data. I need to simplify my music consumption.I want and feel the need to make myself listen again.

I have too much music in digital form. I rarely whack an album on and actually listen to it properly.I always end up listening to the same stuff and I feel shackled by choice.

See-The Paradox of Choice - Why More Is Less

If I got a Turntable again, Bought some vinyl and made the effort to get off my backside...This "effort" would be far more rewarding I feel.

Thoughts?

There is really no need to do this, why not just use the technology you have to emulate the way music used to be consumed?

Take your ipod or phone or whatever and remove all the music bar 2 recent albums then get yourself a third brand new one. Now only listen to these albums for the next couple of months.

Pretty much the way it went when I was younger.

I know what you mean. Its very easy to use music as the background for our lives but we rarely actually just sit and listen to the music itself. I don't know that moving to some vinyl would help as you probably just won't make the effort to use it.

Just set some time aside each week and pick a new or classic album to listen to without distractions.

Tend to agree with this. Music is music and if you're not listening with one format what will really change if you move to vinyl? I myself am a vinyl fan and I find with so many other distractions I don't listen to music as much as I used to...

Maybe we need to get rid of the distractions and simply make the time to listen!

If you're not listening to the music you're not listening to it for a reason.

Sure if you had a vinyl collection you might be more obliged to listen to an entire album as it was pressed onto disc, but how much of that do you actually want to listen to and how much is you thinking that you should.

Vinyl is crackly rubbish. Do the above. But I tend to listen to an album several times before I play another. I am hammering Glenn Hansard: Rhythm and Repose at the mo.

A lot of people here who clearly do not use vinyl.

Vinyl teaches you new respect for music. The size, the delicatenes, the artwork, the warmth of the sound, the fact that you even have to change sides. Also by buying period vinyl you can guarantee the record has not been overprocessed or remastered to hell and back. I reserve those very special albums on vinyl for special listening sessions.

I remember when I first received Coroner's Mental Vortex on vinyl me and my gf were both staring at the record, it was so beautiful. It had an authority all of its own.

^ haha
I was waiting for someone to come in with the "warmth" of vinyl. I used vinyl for years when I used to DJ but the only reason was purely for the feel and manipulation of it on turntables to mix with. Never was I under the impression that Vinyl actually sounded better. I think people that push this argument are a bit strange.

I actually think vinyl is wonderful, the feel, the sound, the artwork. You should do it OP more to music than sticking an ipod with 9790789078968 songs on shuffle. Which sadly is what most people do these. I feel to many people don't list to a whole album these days.

The artwork? You mean the same artwork on CD/digital folder images?
The sound? You mean the same sound from a CD/digital copy?

These days, it's a stupid idea unless you have the space for it and inclination to maintain it.The only reasons most people collect it is because they're actual collectors (such as a friend of mine who still buys EVERYTHING in vinyl as he still uses his decks) or you're a hipster audiophile who hates anything that isn't analog.

My thoughts on it from another thread asking a similar questions:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=22975591

The only reason I would buy something on vinyl now, is if I had the space and absolutely could not get it anywhere else on a physical CD or digital format.

I used to work in a hi-fi shop that had some fantastic turntables, thousands of pounds worth in some cases, absolutely fantastic sound.

I'd still get a good vinyl system now if I could afford one - got some old Pink Floyd records in storage that have fantastic sound quality.

Edit: Just had a look to see what the prices of turntables are these days and my couple of thousand £ turntables are small fry compared to the price of these fellas ...

Yours for a mere $300,000...

You can also get great turntables for <£1000 :p

Absolutely this.

I have a hifi set up for both CDs and vinyl.
I like to buy the albums I really love on both formats, (some records now come with a voucher to d/l a free digital copy).
For the people saying its the same....well, it definitely isn't.

I have Devin Townsend - Terria on both formats, and if you were to put the cd on after listening to the LP you'd notice a difference. I've found that CDs tend to sound very upfront and 'in your face', where as vinyl sounds a lot more open and pleasant.

I love buying music, infant I don't download any music at all, I love owning the physical media.

I just got hold of Opeth - Heritage on vinyl so I'm looking forward to giving it a spin tomorrow.

You're totally correct about the fact that you get a 'pure' sound that the artist intended on original release vinyl.
My dad gave me a copy of Steely Dan - Aja which he bought on release day, and it trounces the latest cd masters totally and utterly.

Yeah, Vinyl gets me out the house. Some gems can be picked up in charity shops for buttons :p

Its not, The artwork on vinyl has a larger surface area for starters.Along with the other delights involved with whole package.

The sound is not the same.If you think it is then you are completely out of your depth in this thread :p

That feeling when buying a vinyl will always beat simply downloading an album. Even buying CDs gets me excited. :p

I'll play music from my laptop, phone, etc. all the time, but always whilst doing other things. I'm never really concentrating on it. Now with vinyl, I like to go in another room away from it all, have a nice drink and just sit back and relax. I love the whole experience of it all. Friends think I'm mad and far too old for my age, but oh well!

Got a new Hendrix album coming soon on vinyl and I just can't bloody wait.
