i7 920 D0 @ 2.6Ghz

Bit late to the party but I just checked some old 3Dmark 11 stats and I got just over 4ghz on my old 920. I wouldn't really bother upgrading personally unless you wanna do something more involving multi-taskiing, video encoding etc. For gaming and general tasks it's a bit of a waste of money to upgrade CPU. I personally am gonna keep my 990x until it melts on me but I did spend too much so need it to last my lifetime, lol.

My i7 920 has been running stock with speedstep for 3 years now :)

Never overclocked it as it has been fine at stock, will keep this chip for another year or so yet.

Still running a 3.6 GHz D0 920 (180x20 in BIOS but with Turbo Enabled goes to 180x21 in normal use) at stock volts. Beautiful performer and even though I know my 680 SLI would happily eat up some more CPU power, the FPS I am getting at 2560x1440 is excellent in all the games that I play.

X58 has been a wonderful platform so far - pushing 3 years since the install and the only reason I would like to upgrade actually, is to get the full benefit of SATA III, and even that is more of a luxury than a necessity.

My D0 is only really stable at up to 4ghz on air, I can push it to 4.2 but I have to start pushing some serious volts through it which I wouldnt want do as its now 3-4 years old. I also have the C0 which only really sensibly overclocks to 3.8.

People saying 4.2Ghz on air are being incredibly optimistic.

Average attainable for a D0 is 4Ghz give or take 50Mhz in either direction with a top end air cooler.

4.2Ghz is very unlikely even on water.
Tbh, ive seen quite a few on here at 4.2ghz on top end air cooling, my own included.

That was with a prolimatech super mega with dual akasa vipers. After switching it for an alpenfohn k2, the temps were 7-8c lower across all cores. And a lot less fan noise, due to the quieter k2 fans and its larger surface area.

+1

That was from the time we were running the custom pc benchmarks mate. You kept egging me on to clock it a bit higher. Which of course i had to oblige.:D Tbh, that cpu was better than my current 3570k.

Yip, we had a great fun competing against each other. :D

How you doing setter, lol should have kept that 920 they still kick butt. ;)

Was a great thread mate. And doing good thanks. At the time i had the 920 and another 930 based system. One of them had to go. Still have the 930 as a second rig, kept it as it has a more up to date 2nd generation motherboard. Hoping to change the cpu in sig to a 3770k soon.

Thought it was C1, could be wrong though. But, they were harder to clock than the DO 920's. Quite volt hungry chips.

Ahh, thats it. (too much wine tonight lol). Fantastic cpu's the 900 series, theese and the q6600 are the best ive ever owned. q6600 i had was tricky to get to 3.8ghz on air, involved lapping the cpu and cooler. My 920 was a breeze to clock to 4.2. Again on air, kinda regret selling it tbh.

+1 - There's no way l'll get rid of mine even though l need a 2nd PC, as l say it still kicks butt and will do for some time yet.:)
