Hi guys,

New to this forum so thanks for accepting me mods!

Wanted to ask a question about some of my sound devices. In device manager/Sound,video and game controllers section, I have 3 devices listed:

1- AMD High Definition Audio Device
2- Asus Xonar DX Audio Device --my sound card of course
3- Realtek High Def audio

I wanted to ask if I should disable 2 of them, number 1 and 3, since they seem to be motherboard related. Do I need them enabled, since I have a dedicated sound card?

I have been getting some BSOD's for a while now whilst playing games, well not always BSOD, but sometimes games freeze and computer restarts itself.

I have updated video drivers etc, but read somewhere that having multiple audio devices enabled can cause similar issues, is this true?

By the way, I have yet to run any memtest checks on my RAM so that could also be the cause of the games feezing when they demand more memory etc ..

Thanks.

One possibility is that the game freezing could be caused by the GX mode. That has been to known to cause issues with some games. Try turning it off, see if makes any difference. If you have already turned it off, then try disabling the onboard audio and HDMI audio.

If again, that makes no difference; another thing you could try is Brainbit's Unified Xonar drivers. Asus drivers can cause issues for some people, so it might be worth giving modified drivers a go.

Thanks for your help, I checked the control panel and GX has been enabled this whole time, so I disabled it straight away, hopefully this fixes the issue...time to go burn weed fields in farcry3 lol

Number 1 is actually related to your graphics card, as I assume it has a HDMI port - don't think it can be disabled, but shouldn't need to - everyone with a Radeon will have this audio device.

Number3 - The realtek can be removed, the easiest way being to disable it in the BIOS.

However, you should not need to disable sound cards, as Windows can happily manage more than 1 Sound Card (We do this at work to have both headsets and speakers for our VOIP phone software - so that the phone rings via Speakers, but actual conversations are via Headset) - just make sure that your Asus is set as the default output device for Playback.
