Findus admits frozen lasagne was made with 99%horsemeat

I want to know how the hell it's cheaper to farm horse meat than cow :|

Because it isn't covered by all the regulation and controls that beef is to ensure compliance with human consumption standards and the ability to be verified all along the food chain.

Plus if it is being done on the side by criminal gangs it could be any old manky nag being minced up and sold off on the side cheap.

What's worrying is that they found traces of Phenylbutazone in the horse meat, so more likely to be a pet than bred specifically for eating!

Probably, either someone has bought a few horsies for their daughter and they've underestimated the cost of that kind of investment, or *****'s are going around stealing and selling them.

What is wrong with horse meat ? I can understand if you bought something that said Beef whatever and you got horse meat.

But I mean in quite a lot of Europe. Certainly here in Brussels you can order horse steak from a restaurant. It’s quite tasty if I'm honest.

Horsemeat is lovely. It's lean, sweet and delicious. However this horsemeat has got Phenylbutazone trace in it which is no longer fit for human consumption, and eitherway also means that these horses were not meant to enter the food chain. You cannot eat meats which have these sort of drugs still in their system.

I think the other issue, is one of trust. If companies advertise something as 100% beef, when it isn't - people are being missold these products. Should there be any religious issues, or just as importantly, allergy issues, the fact that the product was contaminated with a different meat is quite significant.

Here in the UK horsemeat isn't (or wasn't) part of the standard normal diet, we just don't (or didn't) eat horsemeat.

It's not an issue if you don't buy crap processed foods. :)

You hope ;)

Well true... but I can tell the difference between a cut of beef and a slice of horse :p

If I start growing udders, and my schlong extends to over a foot long I'll at least know why.

The thing is the food that has appeared was proper bottom barrel rubbish, Tesco basic burgers and some 99p frozen crapasta, spend cheap get cheap.

I bet this meat is everywhere, school dinners, hospitals etc etc anywhere they buy processed, low per head cost meals. Also I wonder about the Mac and BK???

Can you tell what the animal was fed on by looking at said slice of beef? :p

I've no issue with eating horsemeat, so long as I chose horsemeat and have confidence that the meat has been produced and handled in the correct manner.

The fact that I could be buying what I thought was beef and to find out it isn't is not on and there are people that need to be accountable and brought to justice for that.

Probably a large portion of the consuners who buy those cheap crapasta meals are the poor, people who maybe can't afford to go and buy a fine cut of beef whenever they want to.

Rubbish. Cooking is cheap. People are lazy. Plenty of bargain tastic cheap meat cuts.

As for it containing banned substance, that's an Internet rumour ATM.

The FSA said: "We have no evidence to suggest that this is a food safety risk. However, the FSA has ordered Findus to test the lasagne for the veterinary drug phenylbutazone, or 'bute'.

oh yea I know I'm from the UK just living in Brussels currently. But it just seems weird that UK still has that kind of "taboo" with horse meat.

However yea I can understand that if you buy a product labelled beef and its actually horse meat I'd be rather annoyed. Especially if it has Phenylbutazone in it

I like to try different foods though. Travelling a bit around the world I've tried loads of different things that most people in the UK would probably not want to (either via choice or that "taboo" mentality).

Bear meat is also extremely nice I had that in Tallinn. Possibly one of my most favourite meats :)
