Our IT department recently enquired how we ran a particular process, uploading files to the mainframe which they didn't know how to do.

They didn't quite understand the explanation so sent someone over with a camera to take a picture of the computer screen :D

Can anyone top that for stupidity?

Not the IT Dept per-se as ours is non existent hidden behind online logging software and remote access. However the infrastructure can be frustrating with a lot of slowdown during peek usual e.g. when most of the global teams are online.

I came from a 80 people office previously that had a support team of 2 actual onsite people and I found it was a lot quicker to get anything sorted.

Whereas default for my currently remote guys is remove software and re-install which 9/10 times does not work.

We have to ring someone in a far eastern country to log IT problems, who then contact the IT department 300 yards away from us to come look at the problem. When they could just set up an intranet form to fill in which gets logged and sent to the IT department directly, cutting out the middle men.

Do you get free ringdings?

When i first joined my company my remote log on wouldn't work from home, for 4 weeks my laptop went back and forth to IT, them insisting it worked when they tested it, me knowing it didn't when i got home, they blamed my router, my ISP, anything they could that wasn't them.

Turns out they'd given me a profile that only had access from 9-5, the very times i wouldn't actually need remote access. Why they even had such a profile i still don't understand.

I've been there 3.5 years now,and that's the best they ever were, it's been downhill since then.

Ours are pretty good... then again its a software firm so the majority of the staff are technical - it wouldn't really be tolerated if the guys doing the internal IT house keeping stuff were muppets.

It might be a IT department joke, they might not have believed you were doing it that way :D

We have one contractor in a company with, I dunno, ~100 PCs and a network running throughout 5 or 6 units on a single site. He does a cracking job TBH.

I run ours with two other people. The Head of IT's an accountant as is the IT Director. Decisions are generally made based on what's new on TV or who shouts the loudest and makes the job very stressful at times. Magpie-ism is rife within the company :(

Ours is based in Skipton and is not too bad. They do however ask us to try restarting Windows regardless of what the issue may be lol!
