Lately i seem to be a ******* magnet out on the road, i am no saint but what i get up to involves just me, not pulling out in front of people and generally nearly causing accidents. Another encounter just now with a retard that pulls out of a side-road without looking right, has me semi interested in getting one of these little recorder jobbies that record the driving onto a SD card then overwrite every 12 hours or the likes.

Do you have one and what one, whats the quality like and how is it installed :)

If you're on a budget and already have an Android phone, there's a handful of apps that do this.

i mean the effort of plugging in phone every journey or mounting it up on dash or however it works.
I am of the mindset a phone is for texting and calling, i hate using it for much more than that. Plus half the time the phone gets left in my jeans pocket especially if coming and going from the car, nop thanks, rather have something designed for the job

no thanks to defensive driving techniques, i will react when i have to but not just because someone is at a junction waiting to pull out. I am very observant and was aware of that chap pulling out on me today, seen that he didnt check to the right, where i was coming from and slowed up without issue, and it was a NSL, reckon i was doing 45-50 tops, but if it was 2 or 3 seconds later it would have been very different

If you say a blanket "no thanks" to defensive driving techniques, you will end up having an accident sooner rather than later. It may well be the other person's "fault", but the fact will remain that you could have done something differently to avoid the accident.

It's the "2 or 3 seconds later..." bit that's the trouble. If you see a car there, and see that he hasn't checked to the right, then slow down. If you're approaching and he *still* hasn't checked to the right, then take action. Even hovering your foot over the brake pedal will shave nearly a second off your reaction time, and could avoid a smash should he pull out.

The long and short of it is, you don't want to crash. It's a pain in the bum, it's expensive and could result in serious injury. People make mistakes, it's part and parcel of being human. You need to allow for people to make mistakes, or you'll crash.

this is not going in the direction i want at all....

I dont want to hear about driving styles, my driving is fine. If ya have something to add about cameras though, the floor is yours

You brought it on yourself. I'd contend that it's obviously not fine if you're only 2 or 3 seconds away from a nasty accident with a man pulling out from a side road that you'd already seen not looking in your direction, yet done nothing about apart from call the guy a retard.

On the subject of cameras, look in the Advanced Driving section on PistonHeads - a bunch of guys use various cameras there, Roadhawk is (from memory) one of the more popular models.

But a video recording of you driving straight at an obvious potential hazard without so much as slowing down isn't going to do you any favours with plod should you end up having an accident ;)

I use the key chain cameras for track days & karting (velco stuck to dash/helmet) and they are nice and clear for the money - about £30-35 for the HD version with wide angle lens. The battery in them will only last about 20 mins though but you can get a larger external battery pack or run the cable to the cig lighter permanently. It can be set to record when switched on, so just one press to start and stop each journey.

I slowed down the instant i seen him start to pull forward, i was fully aware of my road surroundings and aware of the road i was traveling on, doing considerably less than the speed limit also. Now, I didnt nearly have a accident. The guy is a retard, no doubts. I slowed down and didnt even come to a stop, i dropped to about 10mph before was 20 yards from his rear bumper. However, if he pulled out 2 or 3 seconds later, in the wet conditions today, on a farm road that it is, it may have been different and i could have done zero about it. I was already driving safely along the road. What i want a camera for is if he decided to pull on out, right as i was passing, simples. grasp that ?

I use an app called Daily Roads. Tempted to get a wide-angle lense off ebay to allow the phone camera to see a bit more.

No matter how defensive you drive, someone can still drive like a 'tard and cause you problems.

Search for in-car camera on here there have been a few threads about it.

Exactly, another instance that happened last week, going round a 2 lane roundabout, coming up to dual-carriageway exit off the roundabout both lanes on the roundabout can flow onto the carriageway, inside lane of roundabout automatically flows into the fast lane of the carriageway, outside lane automatically flows into the slow lane of the carriageway...... or if your really dim like this chap you can realise your in the wrong lane and drive accross the lane to continue on around the roundabout. I was in inside lane, went to drop onto the carriageway and fella on outside carries on and does not take the carriageway exit near cutting me in half, again i was fully aware of his presence and avoided a crash by doing a full lap of the roundabout again. Outside lane on roundabout is for joining the carriageway only, not driving on around

I know of a few roundabouts where, despite the clear road signs and road markings, people still get in the wrong lane and then end up moving into the incorrect lane when either exiting the roundabout or going around it. I've even gone back and checked the signs and road markings to check that I'm not wrong. M4 joining A34 roundabout is a right mare for this.

In all of the instances, no matter which lane I'm in, people will always end up trying to get into the wrong lane. I usually slow down and check all blind spots to be sure but occasionally you'll get someone who cuts across at the last minute or who doesn't indicate.

Let's not forget people who drive with no lights on on or cyclists that decide to wear all black with no lights. I'd rather have a video to prove I was not in the wrong if something should ever happen.

And thats exactly why i want one. near 9 years of driving i have never had a car collision, but be nice to have it covered if it happens.

Depending if you want to spend a few hundred the Blackvue cameras really are quality. GPS sensor, full HD quality, if you go on YT you can see plenty of examples and in full HD you can easily make you number plates/peoples faces - would be very good evidence!

I understand the OP wanting one. I drove somewhere in the morning and it was quite busy but I got there fine, on the way back I had:

- Car uses wrong lane for a junction, cuts across from the left with about an inch to spare to use the lane to my right as we go around.
- Bike wobbling along in the middle of the road holding everyone up.
- Someone crosses between cars the very second the lights turn green.
- Car cuts into my lane with no indication, I beep, car goes back into own lane, does EXACTLY the same again but indicated, so that's okay I guess??
- Car doing 25 in a 40 up hill, does 40 in a 30 downhill.
- Van takes the apex on a three lane roundabout nearly forcing me into the roundabout itself.
- Single lane light controlled junction but wide, car squeezes down my outside and cuts across me when the light turns green, had to slow down and move else she would have hit me.

Nothing changed about my driving, I avoided collision, I just managed to collect a load of utter morons and I couldn't do anything about it.

yup, or last weekend in the middle of the night going down motorway, casual as you like not on a mission, all a sudden the headlights pick up 2 completely drunk fellas walking over the road.
Or 2 weeks ago a large black labrador running across a carriageway again

Its all about protecting yourself as much as possible, as we all know how laughable the court system is now, and common sense decisions has went out the window
