It's been many years since Half-life was top dog, has valve's blunders led to its downfall?

Valve hasn't embraced consoles and kids nowadays probably do not know what half-life is. Have they accepted that they are now publishers over developers?

Will we ever see Counter-Strike 2, if done correctly it could be awesome, yet another franchise that the kids won't know what it is, Call of Duty has killed CS.

Day of Defeat - again killed off by early CoD games and people moving to consoles.

Portal 2 was an exception thankfully.

Team Fortress 2 is good but ruined by MMO bullrubish and crafting, what is crafting anyway?

/rant over.

No they haven’t killed it but Half lifes has become valves system seller for lack of a better term, next time they want to introduced something they will tack half life 3 onto it to sell it.

Nail on head, but I expect the next installment to be a "game changer" much as the previous 2, Valve are not EA and have a history of doing things right. Very right.

I agree. I do think they will use it to get sales on something like the Steam Box but I don't think that'll it be some terrible generic first person shooter. Valve always introduce new things and they really do make amazing games, I don't doubt that HL3 will be another.

who cares about half life anyway

I do, loved both games and was really invested in the episodes. The second episode had a great cliff hanger ending but that was five or six years ago now, what the **** vavle?! I know meeting deadlines is never something Valve worry about but I'd love an update on whats happening with the game they seemingly can't be bothered to finish.

From what I've read they want to put out something thats actually new and ground breaking with the next half-life installment rather than just push out yet another slightly updated source engine game and slap the 3 moinker on it. (This may be part of the reason for the partnership with J.J. Abrams beyond just making movie ports of existing games).

^Yep, and that'll be best done with the new consoles being far closer to current PC tech since they'll surely want to port or put it on them simultaneously.

Only discovered the series in '07 and still enjoyed the first game despite it being nearly a decade old by then. The sequel and episodes too in varying degrees or ways. Fingers-crossed for HL3 when it does finally come, no unreasonable expectations tho...a good game is all I want.

Valve really aren't that great.

Is this where you go down the DOTA has no lore etc road?
Valve are great.

Dota2 is amazing.

Counter Strike is amazing.

TF2 is amazing.

Steam is amazing. (For my uses anyways)
(I have no idea how good HL/2 is, never bothered playing them and arguably the best of their creations)
Only company that comes close to Valve in making games that are consistently favourites of mine are Blizzard.

What? I don't know anything about Dota so I can't comment. Valve are good, but they ain't this amazing company everyone bums them for being, they've done their fare share of bad things, that's all I'm saying. It's just meh hearing it all the time, they ain't as bad as say, EA or Capcom but they ain't the Messiah.

Infact when you take a look at what happened with Left 4 Dead, they are very naughty boys.

I wouldn't compare them with Blizzard though, they are much better than those lazy money grabbers.
