Recently brought an Alienware X 51 and I was reliably informed my them that you can upgrade most of the major components so in the first instance I upgraded the graphics card from a Gt 640 to a gigabyte gtx 660 windforce 2gb, used it properly last night and playing battlefield 3 and msi afterburner shows the card running at in the high nineties?

Is that normal because I don't think it is? I've got the latest bios and nvidia graphics drivers installed?

Hi

No way should it be hitting any where near 90c under load it should be in the 60s max .

Could be that the x51 has poor airflow and is not getting rid of all that hot air. :p

But alienware have stated that you can use a gtx 660 so irrespective of the size and all over the net people have installed them and dell ship them with them installed too?

The GTX 660 dell supply is a less powerfull and cut down version of the 660ti with a reference cooler the hot air is expelled out of the card at the back.

gigabyte gtx 660 windforce 2gb is more powerful card with an non reference fan
which would need a case with better airflow because it expels the air into the case.

your gpu only gets hot air from the cpu cooler, and the hot air in the case is extracted by a single 80mm - not the best airflow. but try configuring a manual fan profile, see if it helps. get msi afterburner, set "auto" and user fan control, then make a curve that goes to 100% at like 70 degrees or something. it'll be loud but it will probably help somewhat.

Actually it's my fault I've looked at the wrong msi afterburner graph, it was the Gpu power that was running in the high nineties, the actual Gpu temperature at its highest was 70c
So I guess it's not that bad.. Doh
