According to GameStop, they believe that any console which blocks the use of used games in any way would definitely be a bad marketing choice for the console in question. In this case, the console in question is the Next-gen Xbox which still hasn't been announced yet.

GameStop spokesman Matt Hodges told sources:
"We know the desire to purchase a next-generation console would be significantly diminished if new consoles were to prohibit playing pre-owned games, limit portability or not play new physical games."

He also stated that GameStop came to this conclusion based on surveys of their most active customers, the 21 million US members of their PowerUp Rewards loyalty program.

GameStop generated 27 percent of their revenue and around 46 percent of profit from used games during the business year which ended in January 2012. And a report by sources about the used games possibly being 'killed-off' caused GameStop's share prices dropping 6.8 percent, which is their biggest fall in a month.

Although the used game blocking story was a rumor, if Microsoft does make that move, many consumers who play consoles and would rather spend their money on used games like most people, have said they will be switching consoles.

Microsoft has responded to these rumors by saying "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

If there's no BC and the ability to use 2nd hand games was blocked, it'll be enough for me to skip this generation entirely. I have enough games on my current consoles to keep me going for a couple of years already. And my collection is tiny

Not having it.

No pre owned games mean publishers will be able to control the price point of old games. Games that are 2 years old etc.. Will be cheaper because publishers will be getting their profit where currently game stop game toys r us etc.. Get all the money on pre owned.

Look what happened to steam with no second hand games

This would make it great for buying secondhand consoles....
As they would all come with loads of games...;)

Because the sellers wouldn't be able to sell off any the games on there own..

Not really surprised by GameStop's comments given that they rely on 2nd hand games for revenue. Perhaps it will kill more retailers on the hight street, but it won't kill the games industry.

Its also quite clear that any such policy is going to be tied to the account, so that if your console is broken you will still have access to them. Not really any different to how things are now, but some people don't seem to realise that.

They'd most likely be linked to an account rather than a physical machine.

Almost certainly if it does come about. And if it does I hope they leave it to producers to decide whether they implement or not. It would at least allow gamers to vote with their feet in the choice of games they buy. If the lock down comes from the console itself I won't be buying.

If the games are cheaper like on PC and follow the steam model of going pretty cheap quickly then I would not really have a problem with the MS rumoured lock down on games, or if Sony do it as well. I would probably be a lot more choosy on what games I do buy though.

If they do block used games I probably wont buy the consoles, or wont buy very many games, I cant afford to.

Good for Sonys profits I suppose but will it be good for anyone elses.

I'm not so sure it will be good for Sony or MS. a lot of younger gamers and older like to take games round to there friends and what not. I can see a lot of people being put off by this unless the games are cheap.
