Hey guys.

Continuing my recent life re-evaluation and turnaround, I have realised that I'm pretty terrible at producing music. I have a very vague understanding of the basics needed, but nowhere near the level I want to be. I have no knowledge of music theory, or the underlying principles of synthesis and effects etc. So, I'm considering doing a course at Point Blank London, more specifically this course: Introduction to Music Production: Logic Pro. I think this will really help me get a decent basis in the theory and skillset that I'm after.

However, it's 2 grand. So not really the sort of money to throw around lightly. So, this being a pretty well populated forum, I imagine at least one of you has tried and completed a course here.

If so, how did you find it? Was it worth the outlay? Did it help you get a decent basis in production?

Cheers guys.

Self-study?

Most of the producers I know taught themselves how to use Logic/Cubase/Reason, plenty of tutorials, forums and books on the subject, no need to shell out so much cash on something like this.

Unfortunately I'm not good at self study, and can't afford the kind of gear they have in the studios. This is going to be over the summer to keep myself busy in London whilst doing something that I want to do.

I have a couple of good mates who are both producers, one had a background in music but they were both essentially self taught.

Yeah, I have no background apart from dabbling for the last 5 ish years.

Hi Guys,

Just saw this thread and thought it would be worth jumping on, it's always good to see a little debate and discussion around what we do.

While it's definitely true that there are plenty of producers out there who are self-taught, our students have the benefit of are tried and test course structure which enables them to learn the skills and techniques of production quickly and efficiently. Learning on your own can take years and years of trial and error, whereas we are able to guide you to excactly what you need to know.

As a student of ours you have the opportunity to upload your tracks/projects directly to your pro producer tutor who will then provide personalised one-on-one feedback on your work. This is something that students consistently feedback as being a highlight of their studies.

You can find some reviews of the courses over on the site: http://www.pointblankonline.net/

If you have any questions about courses or PB as a whole then please feel free to ask.

Cheers,

Luke PB

Would probably just be best to learn how to play the keyboard. I say keyboard over Piano because the way the left hand works is completely different and tends to be more chord orientated which will probably be more useful.

Wow, didn't expect a reply like that here . Thanks for the information, having one on one feedback is one of the most important parts for me as I don't really have that many people, if any, who can give detailed analysis of my music.

I am doing that, but there is a lot more to it than that, you have to think about sound design, synthesis, eqing, song construction etc, mastering etc.

Hi there - whilst I didnt do the production course, I did do the DJ weekend crash course and found everything to be spot on, well worth the price of admission. I had a little peep into the music production room when I was there and was really impressed with the setup. I think if you have the money and throw yourself into it, you wont regret it.

Take a look at http://www.dancemusicproduction.com/. Rick's book and video series are fantastic. I've used many online learning tools for Cubase, Logic etc but these teach you about music production not how to use your DAW.

He uses Logic but that doesn't matter you can transfer what you learn to any DAW and his fundamentals is a great place to start.

I'm just starting the synthesis DVD looking forward to it.

Have fun :)

EDIT - It sounds like an advert that wasn't my intention I'm just very impressed with these as a hobbist dance music producer ;) I too was tempted by Point Blank but I couldn't justify the cost :(

I'll take a look, cheers. Just migrated from Reason to Ableton, but I'll be doing this course in Logic.
