Hi,

I have been offered a brand new 7870 tahiti version card with 2 games for £170 as chap at work has decided on getting a 79xx version card.

I currently have a overclocked Core 2 with a 8800GT which i was planning on upgrading to a AMD piledriver and maybe a 7950.

What would you recommend? wait and get a 7950 next month or save £50-£60 and buy this 7870Tahiti now?

Either way it will be a very nice upgrade from the 8800GT.

But yes, see if you can knock the price down a bit more.

And these cards are best coupled with the i5, Piledriver's poor IPC won't be as future proof as Ivybridge.

Thanks for the advice, I will see if i can squeeze the price some more tomorrow but as i say it is brand new!

Computer will be used for VM's as well as some up and coming games (CoH2, Aliens, Bioshock etc) so just thought an AMD Fx8350 would be a good choice for the money?

I will have a look and see how much i can spec up an intel upgrade for.

If you have a look anywhere, no one uses AMD cpus unless they cant afford the intel ones, they are just too far behind atm.

You get 2 free games with any 7800/7900 card atm so dont let him try rip you off, also what games is he giving u? Because the 2 you get with a new card would/could sell for 25 quid min, they are not even released yet. So really you would pay £170 brand new!

He's not ripping me off, he paid £190 i think and as i said its brand new, comes with Tomb Raider and Bioshock codes.

Dont want a CPU war in here, i'm sure either will be a big step from my ageing Core 2!

Which version of the card is it? Is it the Sapphire one? If so then £170 is a good price if it's brand new with the codes (they were selling for £179.99 on TWO last week, and are back up to £199.99 now).

If it's one of the other brand 7870 Tahiti LE cards then I'd skip it, as the coolers on the others are pretty terrible.

If it is the sapphire one and he won't budge on price wait a few weeks it will be on offer here again.

Also the VTX cooler is poop. Wait for the Sapphire 7870XT to come back on offer, or save up for the 7950.

Anyone got a link to a VDX3D 7870 XT review?

I'd like to see what this looks like in comparison to the Sapphire.
