Apologies if this is in the wrong section, not quite sure where to stick it so to speak.

Ok here we go.

My email provider is BT-Yahoo and my emial client is Outlook, it's set up for POP3/SMTP. It's all working fine (I think)

Now for years I've simply left all my emails on the server as a back-up, I never deleted anything. I keep my end tidy and just delete old emails from Outlook. I must have had 2-3000 messages on the server.

Now I bought a Nexus 7 & for Xmas, simply put in my email address/pass word and it set it self up and a if by magic I can send emails from the Nexus.

However it appears to be doing a sync rather that just reading the emails. I've looke this morning and every time I delete a message from the Nexus it is being deleted from the server. It a disaster because I now only have 70 odd messages on the server, years worth of email have apparently been deleted.

now ive just checked the server the nexus is using and it IMAP Incoming (android.imap.mail.yahoo) SSL/TSL Port 993

and the same for out going Port 465

So I'm assuming my emails have gone forever, which to put it mildly is a disaster...

The Nexus can cout itself jucky I not thrown it to the end of the garden.

But is ther a way I can force the Nexus to use POP3 servers??

If you wanted to delete an email then why is it a disaster that you've deleted it?

You should always use IMAP as emails and folders will be identical on every device and your server won't be full of a load of spam and crud.

There will be an option within the email client of the nexus to "leave copy of email on server"

Why on earth would you rather work on local copies of emails rather than work directly off the server copy? Your approach to email management is rather bizzare...

Anyway, I'm sure there are connection settings for your email account on the nexus to switch from IMAP to POP3 (why anyone would want to do that is beyond me). If you don't have an answer by this evening I'll have a look on my Nexus 10 then I'm at home.

Also, if you've deleted these emails wouldn't they be in your trash folder?

First off I'm no expert that's why I'm asking the question!!

I tended to leave the stuff from years back on the server (or did..) and just current stuff locally. My thinking was at least I know where it is and I won't have 1000's of emails in my inbox.

OK I've just had a play with the Nexus 7, if you let it do it for itself it chooses IMAP. If I remove the account and set it up manually, low and behold I can choose POP3 and I can also choose never delete messages from the server.

My fault, I just assumed it would set up as POP3.

I have looked in the trash folder, and while some of the messages are there, quite a few are missing.

Ahh as they say you live and learn.

Thanks for the pointers anyway.

I would seriously re-look at the way you manage your emails. Why would you want an email that you've deleted whilst on your computer to still be on your server, phone, and any other device you use?

Ask Bt/Yahoo to recover your mailbox, whether they offer that server is another matter but no harm in asking.

I may give that a try. Cheers

The way I looked at it, right or not.. Is that I just left everything on the server, that way if It goes pear shaped at my end I can still retieve it should I need to. Also if I should delete anything at my end, accidentally or otherwise I still have a copy on the server to fall back on.

It's my fault entirely, I just assumed it would be set up as POP3, even if you look on the BT site, it only gives you details of POP3 settings now.

Deleted items go to Trash. Why would anything go pear shaped? If it did you'd just be left with 3,000 unread emails anyway which is as good as useless.

On the computer, add your BTY account again, this time as IMAP, now copy across all the messages you've downloaded back to the server.

IMAP has pretty much been the standard for a while, blaming the device for defaulting to it seems a tad unfair. As you've quickly learned, IMAP keeps everything in sync, so if you delete an e-mail it'll go bye bye from the server.

Personally I think pop3 is a bad way to manage your email. It may be more pertinent for you to ask how other people deal with many years worth of email. Either way, you should contact yahoo. They'll probably have a backup, though if they were that important I'm surprised you don't. :)

.

You realise the phone will do this automatically anyway? It should have a setting for how recent emails you want synced - e.g. 7 days, 2 weeks a month etc.

Gees guys, I only asked for a little help. And as I said right at the beginning I'm no expert and I held my hand up and assumed how the device had set up. I never blamed anything other than myself.

Also I'm no email guru, info on BT page is on POP3 setting so that's how I set up account years back.

I don't need people queueing up to tell me how rubbish I am for not doing it how they do it. I asked for a little help not for someone to chastise me for not knowing as much as them.

Those that have helped, cheers it's much appreciated.:)

They ARE helping you by trying to get you away from an old fashioned way of doing things.

I just added my BT yahoo account to the Yahoo Mail app on my Nexus 7... works a charm just the same as my Yahoo mail account does!!

And as the App uses IMAP as a default it's easy to keep everything synced... :)
