Just Skyped with a friend who lives just outside Montreal.
It's been as much as -30 and lots of snow recently.
Today it's -20 and snowing.
It's a much more relaxed way of life over there compared to the UK from what I have gathered.
Hmmm - their work ethic is a bit more severe than ours. Private companies generally have longer working hours and offer much less statutory paid leave than we are entitled to in the UK. Better pay though generally.
Nice vibe also - the people are very nice, very friendly. My partner and I seriously considered going out there to live as her sister had emmigrated to Ontario about 10 years ago. I enjoyed visiting as a tourist, but when we left at the end of our holiday we kind of decided it wasn't really for us. It didn't quite have the effect on us that we imagined. We were suffering from a big case of greener grass syndrome I think.
I'm pretty sure you could cope with the weather, you'd just adapt.
I can only comment on Ontario, but to be honest, I found Ontario to be a bit depressing in winter when I visited, the area is predominantly flat and grey. Towns like Niagara on the Lake are nice and the wine region is nice but Niagara Falls town is an unadulterated **** hole and even the falls themselves are not that impressive.
Toronto is a fairly long way to a decent ski resort. It's not exactly all on your doorstep. The place is massive, distances are so much bigger than the UK. People often say, "yeah but you can go to the boonies and ski at the weekend, hike and fish". Well yeah you can, if you don't mind driving for hours and hours. Kind of defeats the object of a nice weekend away for me, personally.
It wasn't that cheap either, at least not as cheap as it supposedly used to be. Diamonds are cheap though. I proposed in Canada and nearly choked when I saw how cheap rings were. I'd bought mine in the UK!
Oh yeah - The locals watch hockey ALL THE TIME. The teams play something like 3-4 games a week during the season. I was there for a week and I was sick of hearing about hockey.
Just do it though if you haven't got that much to lose. You can always go back to the UK. We are almost certainly moving to Houston, Texas later this year, and that's the attitude we're adopting.
