i5 3570k can't overclock

Got my i5 3570k and Asus p8z77-v lx2 today and had nothing but heartache trying to just get everything up and running...

Firstly I had to do a full HDD format which took forever because it wouldn't let me partition anything, eventually did it somehow though.

Getting lots of various BSODs, windows telling me my copy isn't genuine (sorted that now thanks to a 20 minute phone call)

Now my system is somewhat stable I can't seem to overclock at all. Changing the multiplier to 42 and booting into windows the multiplier just always defaults back to stock for some reason :S

any ideas?

Full specs:
i5 3570k
Asus p8z77-v LX2
Corsair vengeance 8gb 1600 (which seems to always default to 1333 mhz)
radeon 7870 jokercard
corsair tx750 v2
corsair a70 cooler
500gb sata
 
Just so you know that processor won't stay constantly overclocked at max speed, it is the turbo speed that will be overclocked. In other words you will only see the overclocked speed under load. Download something like prime 95 which will place your CPU under full load and then check your clock speeds with it running.

Yeah sorry I forgot to mention that, I tested it with prime after upping the multiplier but CPU only reaches 3.6ghz according to CPU-z and coretemp.

I thought turbo boost was suppost to reach 3.8ghz >.<

In CPU-Z under the SPD tab, is there a column for XMP-1600 in the Timings Table? If so, what is the voltage?

well I managed to get the multiplier to stick properly

thing is i'm just getting massive instability issues now, can't even run at 4.2ghz 1.2v without prime crashing after 1 min. BSOD's telling me different things every time.

"cache manager" and "the driver is mismanaging system PTEs" whatever those are

not having a very good day :(
 
So the computer BSOD's rather than prime workers stopping? Sounds like memory or operating system as you have probably realised. Have you checked temperatures in that minute or so?
1/ Try loosening memory timings in the bios to 10-10-10-27 or even 11-11-11-30 see if that makes a difference.
2/ Try booting and running memtest on CD on the sticks individually and together.
3/ Try a full reinstall of windows.

I have it running stable now at stock speeds (somehow, think manually setting ram frequency to 1600 instead of using auto detect fixed it).

I'm confused now though, I change the turbo multiplier to 42 in the bios, and it correctly stays at 42 in the bios and shows a preview of 4200mhz. But when running prime 95 my speeds only seem to hit 3800 and show a 38 multiplier (see screenshot) is this normal behaviour?

Perhaps I am not the best person to ask as I have not overclocked ivybridge on Z77 myself. A few friends have sandys and my recent experience is with AMD FX.

But would you not normally disable turbo in the bios and just change the cpu multiplier when overclocking?
 
Yes. Changing the multiplier is the best way of doing it. These are obvoisly problems with turbo core.

You (op) need to go through and turn all the turbo and power saving features (speedstep) off.

Then use the multiplier to up the freq.

Try 4.0-4.2 on stock voltage.
 
Have you got the turbo setting on enabled or on auto? if i set mine to enable it only goes to 3800mhz but on auto it goes up to what ever multi i set, but it still turns down to 1600 mhz and 1 volt when idle
 
Right well I can't directly give you our settings as we don't offer overclock warranty for components that we don't sell as overclocked.

However I can say that we use the lx2 a lot and it shouldn't have any problem overclocking to 4.2 Ghz

For ivy bridge I would not go above 1.3V on the CPU voltage if you are not modding the chip.

That said a 4.2 OC shouldn't require much over 1.2V if the chip is good.

Best thing to do is Reset your bios and see what the CPU voltage is at to start with. The closer to 1.00V it is the lower voltage you will need for an OC

If your memory has an XMP profile then use it set the voltage a little bit higher than it's rated voltage (if it's 1.5 set 1.51 just to be safe) Many 1.5V memory actually runs fine at higher voltages and in some cases better.


I would personally go straight in with a 1.2V 4.2 OC and see if it's stable if it's not got for 1.25 If that is stable I would adjust it down If I can.

I also had to up voltage of my ram to 1.55v just to keep my system from BSODing all the time (even at stock speeds) (not had a bsod since touch wood).

as you can see from coretemp/cpuz i'm still only reaching 3.8ghz at loads despite what my bios tells me... do i really need to disable turbo mode? I thought the idea of an intel cpu was to overclock the turbo mode and save power when you don't need it (i've always used AMD cpus so i am unfamiliar)
 
Have you updated your bios recently? found this lil clip of a guy making it look easy on youtube
 
Can I just point out instead of changing the multi to what you want under the turbo ratio you should just leave the turbo to enable and go to advance and cpu management and change the ratio to what you want there, this will automatically change the turbo to what you want.

you shouldn't need the ratio control settings.

tried this, same results :(

I think my multiplier is absolutely stuck at 38, won't go any higher.

I used the option in the bios to find find a suitable overclock automatically (reboots system in loop till its satisfied) and all it could manage was 3.9ghz 38 multiplier 103 bus :(

Why can't my multiplier go higher than 38 lmao, this is so frustrating
