As per the title. I'm sick of massive pocket busting phones, and I simply want a smaller unit but with the specs of the larger stuff, so is there any sign of 4.5" or below screened phones with:

720p screen
S4 Pro or A15 CPUs
2GB ram (Makes a big difference.)
Camera that is actually usable unlike say the Nexus 4
32Gb storage or micro SD slot.
etc etc?

I hate Apple stuff, but they are the only one who seem interested in providing a handset that will fit in a pair of jeans pocket.

Those identical specs.......nope :( The xperia T is probably the closest you will get.

HTC might be bringing out a mid range version of the M7/one, iirc rumours are the specs will be something like:

- 4.3" 720P SAMOLED screen (pentile most likely but at that size and res. it won't be a problem)
- S4 dual krait (no S4 pro, but for real world usage it does everything just as fast and smooth as the nexus 4, gs 3 etc. CPU chipset is better than the exynos quad on the whole, in the end it comes down to software optimisation)
- Probably only 1GB RAM
- camera should be as good as the one series currently (which is excellent), however, htc might include the same sensor etc. as the flagship
- Probably 16GB internal storage, too hard to say about a SD slot, the one/m7 will have a SD slot
- battery, probably around 1700 or 1800mAh, which should provide good batt. life considering the power efficient chipset and sense is very well optimised for power efficiency and then they could have improved the power efficiency of the SAMOLED even further

I'm with you kitch, even the N4 is too big tbh.

Gimme a Motorola RAZR i with a S4/OMAP 5, 720p screen, 2GB, waterproof and ASOP with 3 year full support please.

How about the BlackBerry Z10 or HTC 8X if you want to try a different OS?

Hmm, I'm heavily invested in android so I'd like to stick with the same OS if I can. I have thought about looking elsewhere, but I would miss apps like Swiftkey etc etc.

I've lost count of how many times my phone has slipped out of my pocket and this trend of bigger and bigger screens is getting to the point of being ridiculous.

I've got a N4, which dropped out of my pocket onto tiles after a week and I feel like phones this size are just not needed.

It's mad how no OEM has seen the opportunity to dominate the smallish size droid phone space.

Razr I without the onscreen buttons and a sexier design, and top specs, SUPPORT etc = WIN!

They have done... all of the manufactures have small phones. They are just not as high spec because 99% of the people who buy them don't care about the spec, they just want a nice new touchscreen phone that looks nice and fits in their man bag. Basically there is only a limited market for a smaller high end device, plus they would be harder to make, so they don't bother :)

i too was hoping for a really powerful ~4inch android phone but gave in the other week when the nexus 4 came back in stock.

its a better size than i was expecting tbh and ive got use to it but not completely happy with android on it, far too many little niggly problems and thats coming from iOS

It is weird the way android OEM's don't take advantage of the 4-4.3" sized device market as it would be a huge success.

The only device that is top end around that size currently is the one S (it feels smaller than other 4.3" devices due to the design) and the RAZR m (unfortunately we get the razr i here though :()

Samsung had a real chance with the galaxy s3 mini, but unfortunately they decided to completely gimp it down (gs 2 was still better and were charging £300+ for it LOL), just trying to cash in on the "galaxy s3" brand name :(

4.3" is the perfect size for one handed use imo but I want a slightly bigger screen for browsing and videos etc. so 4.5-4.7" would be just about ideal.

One of the main reasons I ended up opting for the Xperia T was that it felt much nicer using one handed.

Was going through a draw today and found my ancient k800i - used to think that was pretty chunky, seems minute now.

Aside from the manbag comment, this is essentially right. Smaller requires better (more expensive, compact circuitry) design of the internals / smaller batteries / better heat dissipation etc... People like bigger screens more you'd think. There was a recent trade report about how much people valued certain aspects of the handset in their decision, screensize is right up there with brand which the report writer theorised that it was to do with bigger/better perception which sounds fairly good to me.

They have done? where? I'm taking top spec.

Harder to make? why?

Well they obviously feel that having a 4" android device at £400+ won't sell in enough numbers. I can understand why.

How did the Xperia S do? Was a top spec phone on release and it's been over a year now.

Xperia S - a top phone? ever? Oh my. And it was still full of **** bezel.

Learn from the form factor of Razr I.

There have only ever been a few top android phones.

Yes it was a top end phone? 720P display with Snapdragon S3 which made it hardware wise better than the Galaxy Nexus. It was the best phone until the HTC One X came along.

It wasn't much bigger than an iphone 4S but had a 4" display.

It was crap - only having a 720p doesn't make it a top end phone. S2 would muller that and so would the GNEX.

size of the razr i vs xperia s is huge given it has the same screen size. Iphone 4 is tiny compared to the XS.

A Gnex wouldn't beat it. I've used both phones and the Adreno 220 runs rings around the SGX540.

I may have exaggerated the iphone 4s comment.

It was as high end of a phone as Sony could have made at the time. Only until Krait/Tegra3 came out, could anything have been better.

The bezel contains offscreen buttons.

Gnex has beautiful stockJB - performance includes software too. Crappy Sony is still stuck on old shizz ICS while even the old S2 is getting JB.

A top end phone is a phone that has all bases covered - screen, battery life, software support, design, camera, dev support etc.

Xperia S just has a half decent screen and not much else. That processor was in the old sensation nearly a year before (still ok though just not top end), It should have been rocking krait just like the HOS did 2 months later. It didn't sell because it was crap and half arsed.

The T was better and now the Z has it almost perfected.
