Windows 8 who's buying/upgrading

God no. Vista to 7 was a bugger leap in speed and usability. I agree 8 boots faster for sure, but apart from that I can't see any big change.

There wasnt a huge jump in speed from Vista to 7. On my hardware Vista SP1 was already fast.
At the time of 7's release existed forums of arguments where claims were being made that Windows 7 is just Vista SP3. Many simply argued in accordance to what they perceived through their personal usage of Windows 7 at the time.

The biggest problem Vista had was immature x64 drivers from manufacturers. During the life of Vista, this problem was worked on and, in turn, provided a Win 7 release that encountered less issues in performance and function.

But by this time people had already made up their mind that Vista is bad no matter what.

I used Vista from day one and to be honest never had any real issues,I also went over to Win7 and saw some speed increase but nothing that I would call a real OS upgrade especially features wide,Win7 had the luxury of being able to use Vista drivers and 2 years waiting for Win7 gave Win7 better choice with driver availability ,unlike Vista which was a redesigned OS from XP and needed new drivers but some manufacturers were just lazy in getting them out the door, another problem with Vista was OEM companies shipping underpowered PCs with Vista(below recommended Vista specs) which did some damage to its reputation....Fact is Win8 has a lot more new features then Win7 ever did over Vista but Win7 users have short term memory in this regard, they also forget I was DOS,Win 3.11 ,Win95,98,ME,XP,2K,Vista,Win7 user as well, showing my age but what the heck lol...

Just thought I'd post an update. 30 pages ago or so I was bitching and moaning about W8, but I bought it anyway. I installed Start8 and I've been using it daily for a few weeks now. I don't use the W8 Start Screen and the hot corners and charms are disabled. It looks precisely like W7, which is precisely how a Desktop O/S should look. Quite happy with it now after a few tweaks.

I'm thinking about giving the Start screen a go, but I'm not sure how one would go about organising the tiles to my taste. Any suggestions?

There is no way. I look at and change mine daily. Have nearly given up and they appear more messed up than when I started!

Remove the tiles that are pointless or not needed, make your own columns and tiles,I have" Main Column "and made three other columns " My Games","Win8 Applications","My Software" ,also added restart and shut down tiles(these two on there own at end so easy to find) after the columns.

I try to list them A to Z so easier to find stuff, also pinned stuff to Taskbar desktop for when I spend more time in the old Desktop ui browsing/gaming etc...so far happy with it,I hope Win9 gives us more customization in Metro and different Metro style tiles etc....

Btw guide here how to for beginners http://blogs.msdn.com/b/zxue/archive/2012/03/07/win8-howto-10-customize-metro-ui-app-tiles-and-groups.aspx ,it covers basics on columns/tiles/renaming etc...or this one is great guide http://winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-8-tip-customize-start-screen-144230

Well that went well....gets to 19% and installation failed, no logs no message :(
Been having a good read around and it seems to be "one of those things", installed a suggested win7 hotfix and disabled AV, still nothing....good job

What AV you using?..might need to uninstall it and reboot.

Remove everything from it, then add everything you want, rearrange and label the columns accordingly.

The new UI I dislike, so that's not a feature to me.

Optimize feature for SSD - what does this do? Turn off indexing and superfetch? Intel toolkit did this years ago.

You've spent the last dozen or so pages whinging that you shouldn't have to use 3rd party programs to do what you want, only to suggest a 3rd party program when someone points out that you don't have to use 3rd party programs as its now built into the os?

Gotcha.....

You don't need ISO mounting software either now, but thats irrelevant as we had Daemon spyware tools years ago amirite?

Sadly curiosity got the better of me and I thought I'd see what intelligent and well thought out debate you'd bring to this discussion.

Win 7 can turn natively turn off indexing and superfetch, the intel tool can do it also, its just more user friendly. So putting it on Win 8s feature list is pretty lame.....just like pretty much everything else on it's feature list.

And I'm right, I should not have to use a third party app to bring back the missing functionality absent in Win 8. You have to use some dodgy russian software to bring the sidebar gadgets back - sounds great. The whole idea of installing Win 8 and then trying to turn it back into Win 7 doesn't make any sense.

Google is your friend ,however you say Win8 is lame feature wise then that makes Win7 features very lame IMHO as a upgrade from Vista,at least Win8 offers you more and better value for money then Win7 ever did ,no brainer in that department.

I had two PCs on Vista for 2+ years and three PCs on Win7 for three years so talking from experience and not FUD.

I'm saying that to me, Win 8 offers nothing over Win 7, in fact is a step back. The only thing I've noticed that is positive is faster boot times, which on an SSD is a few seconds. Everything else different about 7 and 8 has been negative.

I know how Win 8 can be modded to look like Win 7, the very fact that this is happening tells you that MS has got something wrong with Win 8.

So the value for money to me over Windows 7 is very poor, in fact despite buying it I won't be continuing to use it.

MS no longer support sidebar gadgets in 7 as they have been found to be a massive security hole that can't be patched.

You should not be using them.

Win8 does offer a lot of new features over Win7 this is a fact, however you can say you are not interested or don't like them which is fine and your opinon, however it does not take away the fact that Win8 is solid with new features and great value for money.

Personally its more of a upgrade IMHO then when I went from Vista to Win7,at least they finally got rid of the very dated UI which as you know goes back to Win95 days, about time that went way of the dodo.

As to mods I don't really use any unless you count adding Reboot,Shut down, notepad paint etc to Win+X menu(which you can do manually yourself or via third party tool) ,its more of customization really.

For the record I look forward to Win9 with improvements in Metro :) .

^^ Looks good :)

Windows have missed a trick, they should let you pin the start to one screen, desktop on another screen and apps if you want pinned to another.

It looks precisely like W7
Yep, there was never a reason not to upgrade at £25. I very briefly use Win+Q sometimes, thats it and I never wanted aero anyway

Thanks!...for £2.95 for Decor8(with 10% discount) not expensive at all.

I hope they give us a lot better customization in Win9 like autorange A to Z,tile shape options, more sizes etc..
