Hello,

My Sapphire 7870 XT is 2 hours old at the time of making this post. Upon first boot, and running my first game (Mass Effect 2) -

I get this noise coming from my card -All Drivers are installed at this point using AMD Catalyst.

Is this a known problem ? it makes playing games more or less unbearable.

Should i post in Customer Support ? or am i just being a whiny nerd....

Cheers!

Coil whine is a nightmare to listen to and it is quite common. Ramp up the clocks and run Heaven for a couple of hours and see if that clears it. If not, return is fine and I would also return it.

Ive got a Corsair TX650W so i wouldn't have thought that would cause the issue. Thought it would be plenty ;o

I've got another machine to test it in, i could do that? uses an 850W PSU.

You have 14 days to DSR, do as advised above and tank it for a few hours, if it doesn't clear up get it returned if you aren't happy :)

Yeah its pretty irritating.

What will running Heaven on Extreme for a few hours do ? Just interested...

Does it like.....burn the coil whine away? or trick the card into not making noise?

sounds like really BAD coil whine. You have checked its not the fan(s) by stopping them briefly by touching the centre?

i'll try it in my other machine tomorrow, if the problem is still there i'll Benchmark it for a few hours, if the problem still persists, then i can only DSR.

Another possible fix is if you are powering the gpu with a single 6+6 pin pci-e cable, use two pci-e cables using only one 6 pin from each to split the load on the psu.

Only takes a couple of minutes to test.
