***The Official Sony Xperia Z Thread ***

will you get the free headphones with that ?

I've just called my local Three store and asked about the free headphone offer. They said they cannot guarantee that I will be in the first 1000 customer pre-orders so getting the headphones will be a bit of a lottery as they cannot confirm what number my pre-order will be...

I asked in my Three store about this. One sales assistant was useless and told me that it was like a 'lottery', and that I might get one, I might not, I didn't have the time to explain how stupid this sounded.

His colleague then said that he didn't think that 1,000 pre-orders had been placed yet, as there had been a company-wide email update at the start of the week saying that 600 or so had been ordered, so they should still be available. He reckons Three will inform all its stores when 1,000 orders are up, so that the promotion can be taken down.

Yeah, the whole headphone thing is abit of a mess, with all the paperwork i have saying about the pre-order etc there's nothing to say about the headphones...

I expect there is some automatic form sorted once the contract was sorted but the guy who signed me up had to use the flow charts from their internal paperwork that he had received that day and hadn't even had time to read up on it by the time i had come in.

If i don't receive the headphones i will be pretty pee'd off considering i signed up 3 hours after the offer was first advertised.

The amount of small print is a bit of a joke, but Sony have covered themselves, it does really seem like no one is obliged to tell you if you're in the first 1,000 or not, if you are- great, if not, unlucky. Doesn't really help with peace of mind for ordering... Hence I ordered online, so if I don't get the headphones, I can cancel the contract/return the phone under the DSR if necessary. Unlike Three, who are only offering the headphones with orders made in store, lol.

Good photos there but you can definitely see the display loosing colour/grey haze when viewed at an angle, especially against the butterfly further down and it looks like those shots were taken in bright conditions, so it will be even worse/more noticeable in lower lit conditions, not to mention at night time.

EDIT:

have to laugh at their opening paragraph, shouldn't have expected any different considering the name of the blog :p

Xperia Blog has posted a display comparison against a number of other flagships. Seems to do alright, can't see why so many are seeing the viewing angles are poor?
Because the images that show the Xperia from angles show the contrast blown and colour lost...

The butterfly screen is kicking it's rear there. Seems a bit odd though, I would not have thought the viewing angles on any phone from the big manufacturers would have viewing angles that bad these days...

Personally I think there's probably something odd about the camera exposure.

Yeah, good thinking.

I'm sure i will receive the headphones although i will sell them i'm sure as i have a great set of in ear phones which i prefer to use then over the head's.

Want this phone as i really dislike the S3 i have simply from a design point of view and the Xperia strikes me as a great looking and from the earlier reviews were getting a great performing phone. I'm sure those pictures are doctored in favor of the Xperia judging by the blogs name but laterly i've been thinking about how often i use my phone and i'm not staring at it face on, it might be slight ocd but i hate not being square on to the screen but once i receive the phoine i'll give an honest opinion on exactly what i think about it especially versus the S3.

If the S4 turns out to be stunning (unlikely) and very powerful (almost certain)then i can sell the Xperia to cover the cost.

Does anyone have any more info on the bluetooth MP3 player thing to go with the Xperia Z as i think this would be a great bit of kit for use in the Gym and work price dependent.

the S3 and ip5 in an un-biased test would have kicked the Z's ass. Wtf is the S3 soo dark lol.

Jees.... So many fanboys (check the youtube comments), it is unreal, how people can think there is nothing wrong with the viewing angles is beyond me  :o

Putting aside my love for SAMOLED displays :p, this is how I would rate them for colours and viewing angles:

1. One X
2. note II
3. nexus 4
4. xperia Z

However, the 1080P res. is amazing and really does trump all over the other phones.

That's the thing, I thought sony supposedly had some tech. incoprated into the display to give better black levels:

Just as bad as all their previous phones.

This has been a problem with every sony device, awful viewing angles :(

And unfortunately it is like that in every comparison so far and from the play I had with one the other day, turned out just like what we have seen in those photos and videos :(

Yeah kona they have obviously tweaked the brightness etc. to try and make those phones look poor so they don't make the xperia Z look even worse, as said, just have to look at the name of the blog and their opening and comments

EDIT:

And from an angle when all black is displayed, the xperia screen is pretty much white :o :p

Come on, it's all in the blog title :p

Taking the **** though with the S3 and iPhone 5, don't really know who they're trying to fool there.

Just how on earth did they manage that?

But on a serious note - they know 9/10 people don't care about this stuff and will still buy the phone based on looks and the rest of he specs. All in all it's Sony's most complete phone to date. Maybe on their next one they'll remember to do some r&d on viewing angles hehe.

Just software. You can install the Mobile Bravia Engine 2 on other phones. :)

I remember these viewing angles from the Arc. Fine for 90% of the time but certainly not good enough for a £500 5" screen.

Oh, that's a genuine pic with the SGS3, iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 looses 60 percent brightness at 30% and it drops off fairly quickly after that, contrast and colour shift is great though.
Sony screens maintain v.high level brightness through the angles but colours and contrast get *****.

^^huh. My S3 at 30% brightness on a med/dark blue wallpaper is still very bright and visible @ nearly 90 degrees.

One a side note...

SAMOLED just hauls-ass!

GNEX / NEXUS 4 / SGS3

Well if that is the result of "getting better blacks", I will be sure to never install that on any phone that has a LCD screen! :D :p

EDIT:

Lol at the xperia blog comment :D

We're not saying that viewing angles should be completely ignored, but look at the pictures above, the Xperia Z doesn't look vastly inferior to any of the other current flagships. We've always been fond of the Xperia TFT screens which give more natural colours to our eyes compared to the over-satured AMOLED displays that are on the market. That's not to say they couldn't be improved, but looking head-on, we've never found any real issues with the displays.

I cant say I get too hung up on some of the tech specs, especially not viewing angles. I'm always looking at my phone straight on say 99% of the time so all these tests dont bother me.

Dilemna I have is what colour to go for. Ive always been a black handset kind of guy but the more I see of the white version, the more im swaying toward it.

the white looks good from the back and sides but the front should have been all white. i'm sticking to black

Gone for black as well, it will fit in with all my other tech as well as white just looks out of place, especially the glossy cheap looking Samsung white.

I'm hoping that viewing angles won't be horrific and the quality of the screen will make up for any negatives in that department, plus the Galaxy S3 has a pentile screen remember so it's not like that screen isn't without fault.
