Can i get a Refund/RMA on my 7870 XT? (ridiculous Coil Whine)

put your finger on the fan to stop it just to make sure it's the gpu, but if mine sounded like that I'd return it. That's really bad!

Hows that going to help coil whine it dont sound like the fan bearing, bushes to me it sounds exactly like the coil whine I have but in my PSU

Hello,

My Sapphire 7870 XT is 2 hours old at the time of making this post. Upon first boot, and running my first game (Mass Effect 2) -

I get this noise coming from my card -All Drivers are installed at this point using AMD Catalyst.

Is this a known problem ? it makes playing games more or less unbearable.

Should i post in Customer Support ? or am i just being a whiny nerd....

Cheers!

going by the vid it sounds like the 7870, sapphire had this problem a good while back.
if you press against the fan ie making it to stop for a few sec's,that will give you a indication if it is the card and not the psu.

i had 3 Sapphire cards in the past and they all made the same sound as yours
got rid of them straight away.

It's the coils, briefly touched each fan for a second to stop them spinning and the noise continued. The fans are brilliant, silent as hell!

wow thats crazy loud, i thought mine had a bad whine, but that is just nuts, if i had just spent 500 quid water cooling my pc to get it silent i would be pretty annoyed at that.

I made a thread about this a few days ago concerning my 7970. Sounded just like yours and made gaming unbearable. Unfortunately for me mine was just a couple of days too old to return it under DSR so I was naughty and bought another from the same shop and returned my noisy 7970 using the receipt from my new one :p morals.....

As for yours I'd return that under DSR straight away, though coil whine does seem to be an issue with the 7 series cards just some are worse than others

Oh you naughty person.

OP here,

just thought id update the thread, returned under DSR for a refund, thanks to ocuk for fast efficient service!

Have had others trust message me saying they've had the same card with no issues! bit of bad luck, but oh well, onwards and upwards :)

Had a similar thing on my 7970. After running benchmarks for ages and a couple of games over a couple of days it died down. It's still there but I can't hear it over the fans of my PC.
