No, it's not one of those "omg, I'm not getting X which I should be" topics, since most people know those figures are powered by fairydust. I don't even know what my car's handbook says.

Just wondering what is considered 'normal' MPG for every day running around, to and fro work for example. Consider small car, since I drive a nice bit of french plastic Clio ;)

Dash is reading out average MPG of 32.7, and this is over 2000 miles (haven't reset the clock ever lol)

I've heard things like driving style can have a big impact on the figures, so is this sound about right?

Cheers x

It really depends on your driving style and combination of roads you are driving on. My wife gets on average 42.2 Mpg from her 1.4 Getz. That's a mix of motorway and town driving.

Sounds pretty much right for a small car with a 4-pot petrol.

You're right in that driving style has a large effect.

I Average about 28MPG in my 2.0T Audi A3 Sportback, and the "book" figure is about 35MPG...

32MPG in Clio sounds a bit on the low side, but without knowing what year/engine hard to say... for all I know it could be the silly Mid Engined Clio :)

"Book" for Clio 2005-2012 is as follows:
1.2 - 47MPG
1.4/1.6VVT - 42MPG
2.0 - 38MPG

Cliosport V6 - 23MPG :D

2007 and I think it's a 1.6

I've been doing town driving since I last filled up, and reset my trip computer after every fill up. Been averaging 27mpg in the Clio, worst it's ever been!
My commute is usually a mixture of town and motorway and I'll average about 35 then. Bare in mind this is a 182 with 2.0 litre engine!

"Book" Figure for that (assuming its an 04/05 Model) is 34MPG, so not too bad then tbh.

Likely a bit on the low side then (in theory should be around 42MPG), but as mentioned by others would depend on driving style and journey.
E.g. Short trips and getting stuck in traffic will use a lot more fuel.

Perhaps, do have my fair share of rush hour traffic.

I'll reset the clock and check the figures again since when I got the car I had only just passed my test so my driving most likely wasn't as smooth as it is now.

I'm not really the sort of person who'd lose any sleep over missing a few mpg, just curious as the figure is staring me in the face every time I'm driving.

How you drive plays a massive part, usualy I get around 26MPG from my car but can see 35-37MPG if I try and be sensible I.e leaving a slightly larger gap to the car in front and predict what's going to happpen with the traffic in front to use less brakes etc...

I generally get about 37-39 mpg out of my old 1.3 Ford Fiesta. I've changed from mostly town driving to mostly A roads+motorway, and not really noticed any gains because I drive with such a heavy foot, 59bhp yeahh!

I average 30mpg from my 2.0T Octavia VRS (which i have owned for 6 months now and done 5000 miles). This is on my commute which is 14 miles each way and consists of a couple of towns, some traffic, and hilly windy B roads.

With no traffic on a quiet day i can get 32mpg+ on the same commute.

Long motorways journeys give me about 37mpg

Very short town drives will be more like 25mpg (not even that if it is only a couple of miles and it hasnt got up to temperature)

The average on the trip that shows the average mpg i have doen since i bought it shows 32mpg at the moment.

That sounds terrible for a 2.0TFSi A3, do you drive with an iron foot everywhere in sports mode? I didn't hang around in mine (2005 2.0TFSi) and i averaged about 35mpg in mine.

I get about 33mpg out of my saab 9-3 2.0t but that's mostly motorway and A roads.

The wife gets about 45 mpg average on the 1.0L Yaris, it's a bit underpowered when there's two people in the car when on a hill etc, but it does the job. More like 50 when on an A-road/motorway run.

She's not exactly 'kind' to it when going up hills either.

I've managed ~55 mpg in a week of using it before, just to see how well it could do without pushing it too much.

Surely it depends on what roads he drives on normally. If it is mainly A roads and motorway then yes 35mpg should be easily doable ina 2.0 TFSI. Towns, B roads, lots of stopping and starting, traffic and you arent going to be seeing 35mpg.

My 1999 Golf 20v Turbo currently averages 33.9MGPG. This is taken from an app I use every time I fill up so should be accurate. I do a 11 mile A/B road drive most days to get this.

On a long run I see over 40MPG.

My journey to and from work is only about 6 miles each way, by which time the engine has only just got up to temperature...

To be honest, come summer I will be cycling to work again, but hard to motivate myself at the minute.

edit: Don't have an Auto so no "sports mode", presume that was what you were referring to

i am getting around 34mpg all around town driving in a c4 2.0 hdi.
motorways i can see upto 56mpg.

i drive easy and try not to push it hard.

IMO the biggest factors are where and when you drive and then how you drive. If you a few miles urban journey in bumper to bumper queuing traffic you could get 10mpg. Do it in clear traffic, flowing at 25-40mph and you could get 50 mpg.
