I connected the card and it spins up but shows 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter' in device manager

I used driver cleaner and re-booted but still shows the same thing.

Nvidia drivers show 'This graphics card could not find compatible graphics hardware'

When I plugged my EVGA GTX570 back in it shows GTX570 in device manager and Nvidia drivers install fine

Before you rma it anywhere, try this first(NOT with the 570 installed, only do it with the 670 in your rig):

How to Show and Access Hidden and Ghost Devices and Drivers in Device Manager

This will show you the devices and drivers from programs you no longer use, it will free up some disk space, not to mention help resolve potential conflicts between drivers that are no longer needed.

It seems that new cards from both nvidia and AMD are having problems with that mobo. Often the latest bios for the mobo cures/fixes it but not always.

I tested the latest bios a while ago but it was not stable so ended up going back to a more stable one. Why does it seem I always get this crap when I upgrade anything in my computer

No idea sorry and I am just pointing out recent errors for that Mobo. Worth a shot using the beta bios and this may help stability with the 670. I am inclined to blame the mobo over the GPU.

thanks, the current bios is working at the moment but may look into updating it. Cant find it on the EVGA site in downloads though

This sorted it. Thanks Tommy

My 570 was still in there despite uninstalling the driver and using driver cleaner.
I could then install the latest drivers

Glad I saved you return postage mate.;)

I remember having a very heated debate with 555BUK and sinchase iirc ages ago regarding this issue and how shocking it was-with the blame thrown firmly at AMD's feet, despite pointing it out that it happened with both vendors.

Long story short, attempted ridicule thrown at myself along the way, they both said it never happened with Nvidia...

My point is, that it must be an OS conflict in certain configs as it's quite rare, if it was gpu driver related it would be a far more common problem.

Rant over. :)
