Hi all, I need to update my aging q6600 cpu, motherboard and RAM.

This will be used primarily for design work so Photoshop & other Creative Suite apps. I have an old GPU (Quadro FX 3450 or something like that) but I've read about on-board graphics with some of the new CPU's and wonder if I even need a GPU? If so, bearing in mind I won't be gaming what's the cheapest card I can get away with.

I've got a £300 (ish) budget for the CPU, Motherboard & RAM but if I must have a GPU then I'll have to stretch that a bit. Ideally a minimum of 8Gb RAM and a decent motherboard I can overclock a little.

Any guidance appreciated.

I've got an ATX sized case so should be fine on that front. The PSU is a Corsair HX520 which I'm presuming should be ok?

Any thoughts on the GPU? Do I need one if I get the i5 3570k which from what I can see has HD4000 on-board graphics?

Does`nt that depend on whether your software applications benefit form Gpu processes, like Cuda or Open GL. You can always try without or use the Quadro or just get a new Gpu at a later date, if you really need more than onboard graphics.

For an extra few quid you might as well get the 5800k.

Makes sense, I don't want to spend unnecessarily at the minute & I may well find its more than adequate. It will certainly be better than the system I currently use! :D
