fitting a 775 cooler on 1155 board

can it be done?

I ask because I have just fitted the cooler that come with my Ivy-Bridge i5 onto a 775 board just as a tester - because I have to use stock cooler unless i can use my 775 freezer pro - the i5 1155 cooler did seem 2mm shorter in one length/direction between legs than the 775 legs, but it did fit onto the 775 board and clip in?

its the rev1 Arctic Freezer Pro that was out before 1155

anyone got any info on this? can it be done? or should it be avoided for any reason?

Does`nt the Freezer Pro come with an 1156/55 fitting?

no it doesnt, its a rev1 Arctic Freezer Pro for 775 board - it came with bits for all sockets before 1155/56 was out , no longer have the bits anyway - but there seems to be tiny differences in location of the holes and those 'clip in' things have a bit play on them

well I dont have the funds... hence asking if its possible to adapt?

if i did have funds I would just get another £15 freezer - i dont OC the machine nor game, its for silence only

are you sure the 1155 cooler is properly fitted? it shouldn't be possible as the hole pitches are different.

Have you brought the 1155 motherboard yet? if not some of the asrock boards come with both 775 and 1155 fitting holes

i fitted the fan only to a 775 board,did bend inwards by the tiniest amount, the pitches arent that much different so i would like too see one of these asrock board so I can see the holes in it too see how close they are

You can fit any socket cooler to any board if you have enough cable ties.

here's an asrock z68 extreme4 (same as mine) the 775 holes are actually slightly rotated so they can do it. the 1155 holes are circled in white the 775 holes go straight through the PCB next to them

My old Noctua 775 cooler is now installed on my i5 2500k.

I emailed Noctua and they sent me a new mounting bracket. Maybe you could get similar?

as you can see theres almost nothing in it? cant wait for my board to come now lol
