Hi everyone, I was wondering if you could help me. I'm currently getting back into PC gaming, and would like to build a new "rig" for around £400

I will be using the OCZ Agility 3 SATAIII 120GB SSD, Spinpoint F3 1TB HD and Windows 8 Pro 64Bit from my old PC.

I also have my (trusty!) Acer AL1916w 1440x900 monitor, so will be looking to game at this resolution.

I had a quick go at speccing something up last night and came up with this:

One of my friends has suggested I go down the AMD route and came up this build (I don't think the website he used was this one, sorry)

If you want to show the parts you are considering that is ok but please don't link to competitor pricing. Thank you.

I like the look of that one, as the GFX card is a far better one than my attempt, but I'm really unsure about the case and PSU (No aftermarket heatsink, either)

I look forward to see what you guys can put together (As you know your stuff) Would like it to be reasonably quiet, as well : )

Many thanks in advance :D

Intel route is definitely the better route.
However, you might wanna remove those pictures as the first one is linking to a competitors prices...

I did say that I though my friend's build was from another site. I'll remove them if there's a problem, no worries :D

@ spins86x: does the mainboard you list have any SATAIII ports? This is the problem I'm having with coming up with a decent build. It's such a minefield! Cheers for every-ones help, though (You people are mega fast, too!)

Go for the B grade chap. Much better bang for buck its its only missing a driver cd which would have been out of date software anyway :)

I believe the board has no SATA III ports, only II. I have the other version (d3v) that does have SATA III but OCUK currently dont have it. I would suggest this motherboard:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BG-272-GI&groupid=595&catid=689&subcat=

It is B-grade, so the quality should be fine but I would ask first what accessories it comes with as it does vary!

@idleman: Thanks. What's meant by "B grade"?

@snips 86x: I thought the MB only had four SATA 2 (3.0GB) ports? Must have mis-read, sorry : )

@ivorito: Thanks. What accesories would be missing? And what would it have come with in the first place?

My bad, must have had the wrong window open, sorry

Many thanks for all your help and hard work. If any one else has some ideas on a different build, then please feel free to add them :D

That suggested B grade mobo is very much the bargain. It would allow you to upgrade to an i5K down the road and overclock. It does have sataIII ports for your SSD, most H61s only have sataII (tut tut snips). It also does SLI/Xfire properly so it makes sense to opt for a PSU man enough to run two of your chosen GPU. If you know you will never do dual GPUs a good 450W or 500W PSU will be enough.

The 2GB 7850 is the GPU to aim for, you should cop Tomb raider and Bioshock infinite for free with the retail GPU (B grade GPUs dont have games codes). You can't overclock the i3 but the 7850 GPU loves to be OC'd to get better performance ;)

So with my own cash at around £400 I would look at............

YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI HD 7850 OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards £149.99
1 x Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £89.99
1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 (MB-380-GI) £52.00
1 x XFX Pro 450W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £39.95
1 x GeIL EVO Leggera 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (GEL38GB1600C9DC) £35.99
1 x **B Grade** BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Gaming Case - Black £29.99
1 x OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £16.99
Total : £429.89 (includes shipping : £12.50).

Yes more than £400 but you should be getting games aswell to help sweeten the deal. If you could install the OS by USB pendrive you could ommit the optical drive, maybe add a OEM bluray drive later when you have some spare cash?

Right, I've been offered a brand new EVGA GTX 650 Ti (OC version) for 90 quid (From a mate who's having second thoughts after buying the card) Should I "bite the bullet" and go for it?

Sorry to double post, but I've had another go at sorting out a new "rig" under £400:

Looks like I failed! Is there anyway of buying this build under £400?

Will the mainboard fit in the CM case?

I went for the CM case as it has a USB front connection and can mount an SSD without use of an adapter. Good choice?

Is the MSI 7850 OC version worth it? (and is it quiet?)

And has the OCUK 120mm fan got a molex connection on it (And is it quiet?)

Many thanks : )

Im looking at going for the MSI 7850 so if anyone has any experiences with that card I would like to know too! Im looking at a build around £450, so ill keep close tabs with this thread ;)
