A picture purporting to show the new identity of one of the killers of toddler James Bulger has been posted on Twitter, prompting an investigation.

The image is supposed to show Jon Venables, who was jailed along with his friend Robert Thompson for killing the youngster in a crime that appalled the nation 20 years ago this week.

In the picture, the man identified as Venables is seen smiling, apparently at a birthday party.

Venables was given a new identity after being released from prison for James' murder in 2001. There is a worldwide ban on publishing anything that would identify him as Jon Venables.

His parole was revoked and he was jailed again in 2010 for downloading and distributing dozens of indecent images of children. He is now making a new bid for release.

My question here is, what is your view on a situation such as this one, can a 10-year-old boy be forever held accountable for his actions, no matter how terrible?

I think in this particular case, he should remain locked up, he's clearly not wired up correctly (as the indecent images of children offence shows).

It's a difficult one. I think how awful the crime was overrides the ability for most people to forgive his youth.

If it isn't abundantly obvious - posting the picture on here would be a VERY stupid thing to do.

just to make this clear

also do not link/hint etc

this is a valid discussion point and one that I would not want to see get closed

Lock him up and throw away the key IMO. I think it is ludicrous to say that a 10 year old doesn't know that killing a child is completely wrong.

I agree and was going to post the same exact same thing till i re-read your post, like you said he's clearly wired wrong. Anyone who could do something so horrific is just plain bad to the core.

But should he pay for that crime with 70-80 years of imprisonment, an adult wouldn't? Should the underage drinking caution or the shop lifting court appearance at 14 stay on someones record for life?

This guy seems to be beyond rehabilitation IMO. Seriously wired up wrong.

He has had his chance at rehab and for me he's blown it with the child porn thing, he needed to blend back in on release and never be heard of again he has failed to do this so should spend a very long time in prison.

Forgive him for his actions? We did, look what happened, child porn. I hope a localnnutter sees these images and does him over!

Not as simple as that, my mother taught kids with special needs(emotional) and some of them have a hard life, their role models are pretty grim in some cases. You especially needs good role models at that age. You show complete lack of understanding of people needs, desires and the temptation to do wrong.

As far as I am concerned he should pay for the crime for the rest of his life. He has taken another life so why should he be allowed to live his own?

I have this same view on adults though too, anything less then life (until death) is too short imo.

I don't think the drinking caution and shop lifting can really be compared to brutally murdering a child. Making misjudgments such as those don't have a huge impact on peoples lives like murder does.
