Is there such a thing as a half decent compact camera?

First off, I haven't bought a digital camera for some time. In the fact the last digital camera I bought, was 5 megapixels - now they're 16 megapixels. :eek:

I have always liked the Fuji range of cameras, and my current Fuji 5mp camera has served me well; and still does. So that's led me to wanting another Fuji camera, but I'm getting the impression that brand loyalty isn't what it used to be.

I did order, then cancel the order, for a refurbished F500EXR. I cancelled because the reviews weren't as favourable as I liked.

For roughly £100, what is a good compact, 16mp camera? It will only be for occasional use, indoors and outdoors. But I'd like something I know will last me, like my previous Fuji camera.

I fully expect to be hammered by users for expecting quality images for less than £100. But I really just want the best for my money.
 
Do you REALLY need a new camera? More pixels doesn't necessarily mean better quality and if you have one of the f20 f30 series cameras you will not find a better one today.

My current compact isn't an F20 or F30.

I was under the impression that more megapixels give more detail/life to a photo, and that's why I wanted a better camera. I thought surely if I bought a camera now, the quality would have improved not stayed the same or degraded.

I'm in two minds just buying the cheapest 16mp Fuji online, and calling it a day. It seems it would have just the same quality as the F550EXR. :(
 
I wouldn't want 16mp in a compact particularly, instead look for sensor size and lens speed. with your £100 budget I'd trawl the second hand market for a Canon s95 or similar it has a fast(ish) lens and a larger than average sensor which is much more important than megapixel count.
 
At the risk of being flamed, what phone have you got - maybe upgrading to a newer phone e.g. Android or Windows Phone would give you enough of an upgrade?

The image quality on the newer phones certainly rivals my old 8MP Samsung compact... and the Zoom on my compact never got me close enough to make much difference (hence I got a SLR for christmas with the intention of getting a decent lense when money allows)

Higher megapixel is only advantageous if you lack optical zoom (e.g. phones) as you can then use digital zoom (or selectively crop the image - same effect) to get to your area of interest.
 
I don't think you'll get one for £100 but I rate the Panasonic LX5 as really good compact. I actually prefer it to a GF3 I use on occasion which on paper should blow it away.
 
you can get a canon sx220hs for £99
when it came out it was up around the £250
it was what digital cameras premium compact camera of the year in 2011
I have one and it does take some nice pic's for a little camera
 
As above, don't get hung up on pixel count. The only thing those extra pixels will see if the light isn't great is a bunch of sensor noise. My 18Mp DSLR is limited by the lens on it, so I doubt a compact will really make good use of the extra resolution.
